Name: Yukimura Hikari*
Meaning: snow village; light
Life story:
It isn't very common for a village to have a half demon, let alone two. Yours only had one, a half dog demon named Inuyasha, who was often taunted for his "evil" roots. It wasn't something you understood. You would ask your father, but he just told you to stay away from the boy because he was different.
You didn't know that you were different, too.
Once a month your father would come home with a thick, black liquid he'd put on your hair. He'd let it sit and then he'd rinse it off. Whenever your nails started to grow he would cut them short. You weren't allowed to leave the house without your father doing your hair. He'd pull it back, hiding your pointed ears, and secure it tightly. Whenever you were outside and people were around, you were not allowed to look at them. You had to keep your eyes to the ground.
You didn't realize any of this was abnormal until you actually met Inuyasha. Sure, you knew of him, but you never really knew him. Not until that day.
A group of children had ganged up on him. They had pushed him around, thrown a few punches and then they were done. The boys and girls laughed and began to walk away.
"Hey, Hikari-chan, are you coming?" one girl asked. "We're going to play a game!"
"No thank you," you said, looking at the grass. No one ever questioned why you didn't look them in the eyes; you were shy, after all.
"Okay, well, you know where to find us if you change your mind!" she said, waving and running away after the others.
You stood still, watching Inuyasha curiously. He was on the ground, huffing and puffing, tears running down his face.
"Wh-what do you want?" he asked, wiping the tears from his face.
"How long are you going to sit there crying?" you said, looking at him out of the corner of your eye.
"Why don't you just go with the others?" he suggested.
"Because I don't want to," you said simply. "I don't really talk to people much. Well, except I'm talking to you now, I guess."
He was silent for a moment. "Are you just going to keep staring at your feet, or do you not want to look at the monster?"
"I'm not allowed to look at people."
"What? Why not?"
"I don't know," you said, sitting down next to him, still looking at your feet. "That's why I don't understand why you're different. You look the same as everyone else. Is it your face?"
"It's because I'm a half demon," he said.
"You're still half human. You look like everyone else."
Part of him wanted to tell you to look at him so that you could see why people called him a monster and a freak. The other part liked that you refused to look at him because if you couldn't see his face, then you couldn't understand why he was different. You sat there next to him, after all.
You continued meeting him, in secret, of course, so that your father wouldn't find out about it. Months passed, and you never saw Inuyasha's face. It was hard to play with your friends when you couldn't look at them, but with Inuyasha you would just talk, or sit in silence.
"Look at me," he said one day.
"I'm not allowed to," you reminded him.
"You aren't allowed to talk to me, either," he said.
