Name: Teruko

Meaning: shining child

Life story:

You grew up alongside your brothers, often performing tasks for your tribe. Everything you did was done for your people, and though you often traveled on missions and other tasks, you never really left. Despite the fact you're a bird demon, you've never been able to spread your wings and fly away, free from the burdens that come with being a member of the tribe.

After the passing of the tribe's leader, one of your brothers was chosen as his successor, which only further increased people's expectations of you. One day your brother called for you, and he gave you your greatest task yet. He informed you that the Jewel of Four Souls had returned and had shattered into countless pieces, scattering across the land (you had failed to realize this; you had seen several jewel shards soaring across the sky, however, you were too mesmerized at the time by their shininess to care about what exactly they were). Your job, he explained, was to gather any jewel shards you could find in order to increase the tribe's power. A difficult task, but you were capable of it. It was just a matter of making sure you didn't get distracted by how shiny the jewel shards were and focused on your mission.

Though you soon found out that there was more to the matter than simply that.

Picking up a jewel shard from the demon you had killed, you then proceeded to pull out the kerchief you had tucked into your pouch of throwing knives and wiped the jewel shard clean of any traces of blood and dirt. Smiling, you admired its beauty and the way it sparkled in the sunlight.

Only then did you notice that someone was approaching you. You silently scolded yourself for having been so distracted that you hadn't noticed it earlier, and quickly climbed up a tree to remain undetected. Your confrontation with the now deceased demon had left you with a damaged wing, so you couldn't fly away.

"Well here's a demon, but I don't see any jewel shards," you heard a voice say.

"In the tree!" another voice said. Branches were pushed out of the way to reveal you in your hiding spot.

"Great," said a half-breed dog demon sarcastically, "I thought I sensed another demon."

"Yup, I'm a demon," you admitted. "What gave it away? The beak? It was the beak, wasn't it?"

"Hand over the jewel shards," said the half-breed.

"I don't have any," you lied, "and last time I checked, dog demons couldn't sniff out jewel shards, anyway."

"We know you have them," said an oddly dressed human. "They're in that pouch on your hip."

"What kind of human are you?" you said, curious as to how it was she knew this.

"Does it matter?" the half-breed said. "Just get down and hand over the jewel shards."

You jumped out of the tree, hissing in pain when you landed, having injured your leg in the battle you'd been in minutes earlier. You grabbed your shakujō, which you usually had strapped your back, and used it as a crutch.

"You're hurt," said the human.

"How very observant," you replied.

"I can help you," she said.

"Why?" you asked.

"Just hand over the jewel shards!" said the half-breed.

"Why?" you asked.
