It was your birthday, a shitty one at that. You turned 25 today but had absolutely no excitement about it anymore.

All the Avengers were off on some mission today, but you got the day off since it was your birthday. You were happy about that and made plans to go out with your girlfriend.

Everything was going great until you found out that your girlfriend had been seeing someone else behind your back.

You were out for dinner when her other partner saw her and came to confront her as it was very obvious that you two were on a date.

You sat there frozen for a few moments as you processed what was happening. You interrupted their argument and the dude quickly lost his cool towards you.

You tried not to take it too personally. It's not like this was your fault. After a short conversation with the dude, you realised that they had been dating just a few months longer than you had.

You explained your side of the story and he cooled down a little bit and apologised for losing it.

You then made it clear to your now ex-girlfriend that you're done with her and wished her boyfriend goodluck whether he stayed with her or not.

You threw a hundred dollar bill on the table and walked away, going back to the Avengers compound.

You knew that no one was supposed to be there, which was comforting in a way. You definitely didn't want anyone to ask how your birthday went or anything.

You entered through the main door and made your way towards the bedrooms, which required you to go through the communal areas like the kitchen and living room.

You were silent as you made your way towards your room. You weren't trying to be. You just were. Stealth was a very important skill in your line of work. It was second nature and felt as natural as breathing.

Tonight you cursed yourself in your head for having been so quiet. As you walked past the kitchen and towards the living room, you saw Maria Hill laying across the couch, her hand down her pants, eyes closed.

You froze in place, slightly horrified by what you walked in on. Maria didn't even live in the compound, so you weren't exactly sure why she was here and especially touching herself on the communal couch.

"Jesus Christ!" You exclaimed before fully processing the situation as you covered your eyes with your arm.

Maria let out a small scream and quickly covered herself with a blanket, but the damage was already done. You already saw what she was up to.

You were both just frozen in shock for a moment, neither saying anything. Maria watched as you pinched yourself, muttering 'fuck' as you realised that this whole day wasn't just one big dream.

"Sorry, I thought you wouldn't be back for a few hours." Maria said, sounding not nearly as embarrassed as you thought she would.

More power to her if she wasn't completely uncomfortable by the situation. You just knew that you would literally die from embarrassment if the roles were reversed.

"It's okay," you mumbled. "I'll just pretend it didn't happen." You added damn well knowing that you will remember it every time you see her, which thankfully doesn't happen too often.

Maybe that's why she didn't care as much, you barely knew each other and she rarely saw you since she was never really here at the compound.

You continued walking across the living room as you kept your eyes covered, trying to navigate your way through memory alone.
