Y/n didn't expect to see Katie again that afternoon.

She had basketball practice which ran long, her legs were aching and her patience had become non existent. All she wanted now was some quiet.

The library was usually a safe space, the lights were dim and the room was calm. Far from the sounds of lockers, chatter, gossip and the people who thought they knew her.

Y/n had made it halfway down the back aisle of the shelves when she saw her.

Katie was sitting alone at one of the corner tables, notebook open but by the looks of it untouched otherwise. She was just staring at the same page and not moving.

Her hair was pulled back messily and faint dark circles were evident beneath her eyes.

She looked smaller than Y/n had remembered. Less like the girl who had shattered her pride and more like someone barely holding themselves together with sheer will.

Y/n stopped. For a moment she considered turning around. Walking away would be so much easier.

But something inside her, a stubborness, an unresolved pain refused to let her leave.

Before Y/n really made the decision to keep going forward or to turn back, Katie looked up.

There was no panic this time, no scramble to speak, to apologise or to explain herself. She just froze, eyes widening slightly before softening into something a little more cautious. Maybe even a little hopeful.

Y/n sighed deeply. She was so tired. "Five minutes." She said, dropping her school bag onto the chair across from Katie and sat down. "That's all."

Katie nodded immediately. An "okay" springing from her lips.

They sat there in silence, the quiet of the library almost consuming them. Y/n crossed her arms, bracing herself for whatever was to come.

Katie folded her hands together like she was afraid they might shake if she didn't.

A minute had passed and Katie had yet to start saying what she clearly wanted to, causing Y/n to raise an eyebrow questioningly.

"I'm not going to apologise again." Katie said after another moment passed. Her voice was steady, which surprised them both. As much as Katie tried to keep it steady she didnt think her body would actually listen.

"I already did that. And I know it doesn't undo anything." Katie added, her eyes meeting Y/ns trying to read any hint of what she was feeling.

Y/n hummed. "Good because I'm not in the mood for another speech." Y/n said, relieved that it was not some more half assed apologies or excuses.

Katie swallowed thickly. "I just... want to talk. Really talk. About why it happened. I don't want to excuse it. Just to stop lying by omission." Katie said quietly, almost hesitantly.

Y/n leaned back in her chair, taking a peek at her watch. "You have 3 minutes."

Katie nodded, a faint smile tugging at her lips despite the palpable tension in the room. "Fair."

Katie took a deep breath. Taking just a second to organise the thoughts in her head.

"When I asked you out," she started, "I wasn't thinking about dinner or flirting or any of that. I was thinking about what it would mean if you said yes."

Y/n frowned slightly. "Meaning?"

"It meaning I would have to believe you," Katie continued. "And believing you meant risking that you could hurt me."
