You were walking through your town aimlessly. You've had a pretty rough day and the last thing you wanted was to go home to your toxic family.
It was already dark, almost 10 pm. You liked late night walks, especially when it was dark, because there were very few people around, letting you exist in peace.
You were months from graduating high school and you couldn't wait. Graduation meant getting out of this town, hopefully for good. You didn't have a single fond memory here, nothing holding you back.
The breeze of the outdoors was calming, the smell of fresh air invading your senses. You took a deep breath as you crossed an empty street, savouring the quiet moment.
You didn't have a specific destination in mind, but something made you pause. You were at an outdoor pool and decided to stop. You liked watching the water ripple with the soft wind.
The pool was big and it was very dark, no one was really supposed to be here at night, but that didn't stop anyone. Quite often someone would be here for a late night swim.
This time, it seemed calm and quiet as you walked along the edge of the pool. It was so dark you couldn't quite see to the other end of it.
Your head snapped up as you heard a small splash. You thought you imagined it until you saw how the water rippled in an unusual way.
You pulled out your phone and used the torch to see what made the noise, your heart sank as you noticed a person sinking to the bottom.
You never even knew they were here. You didn't know how long they had been under, but assumed that the splash was their last ditch attempt to come up for air.
You didn't waste a second pulling off your hoodie and tossing it aside, along with your phone and wallet, as you kicked off your shoes.
There was no time, so you jumped in with your jeans, diving down quickly. You grabbed them and rose back up to the surface, gasping for air.
Having gotten closer, you saw that it was a girl. Upon seeing her face, you realised that she was your classmate.
You clambered out of the pool, laying her flat on her back. You checked for any signs of breathing, finding none.
You started doing CPR before you even had the thought to, your hands somehow working quicker than your brain.
You focused on the compressions, but you couldn't help but wonder how this happened. She was out here alone as far as you saw, was this her plan, or was it an accident. Maybe she passed out in the middle of her swim.
"Come on, Blake!" You said frustrated, your arms tired after what must have been several minutes of compressions.
She was an asshole to you, but you didn't want her to die. Ever since you came out at school, she was a prick, calling you slurs on more than one occasion.
She put on this facade at school, but you could see it deep down in her eyes that she was hurting. You kind of felt bad for her, but at the same time, she shouldn't be taking out her anger on random people at school.
You were just about to lose hope when her body jolted up, coughing up water. You sat back on your heels from your kneeling position, breathing out a sigh of relief.
Blake turned over to her side as she vomited out more water. You pulled back her hair, patting her on the back lightly. "You're okay. It's okay. " You reassured her as much as yourself.
You were certain this was traumatic for her, but your heart was still thumping in your chest, the adrenaline starting to wear off.
Blake gasped, taking in more deep breaths as she spit onto the poolside. It took a minute for her to come back to reality, and when she did, she quickly moved away from your touch.
