Y/n spent Christmas Eve with her family, playing board games and enjoying each other's company. The one person she was missing was her dad.

He promised to be back for Christmas and she was now patiently waiting on Christmas morning to see if he would show up like he said he would.

It was still early and her mom was preparing breakfasts while Y/n and her 3 siblings watched TV. They ate breakfast, still no sign of him.

Twenty minutes later, they heard a car pull up and they all got excited, knowing that it had to be their dad. Nathaniel ran out to him, wrapping his little arms around him.

"Merry Christmas," Clint said happily as he hugged Nathaniel before Cooper and Lila also met him at the door and exchanged more greetings.

Cooper just grabbed his present and went back inside. Y/n stayed back a little, not wanting to crowd their dad too much.

He finally got in the door and greeted Laura. "You made it." She beamed at her husband, pulling him in for a hug.

"Where's Y/n?" Clint said, realising he hasn't seen his oldest daughter. When he turned around, she was standing in the doorway of the kitchen, her eyes set on her dad with a smile.

He smiled happily as they walked towards each other and embraced in a tight hug. He quickly realised he hadn't introduced their guest to her as she didn't come to the door when they arrived.

"Y/n this is-" Clint started before getting interrupted by his daughter. "Kate." She said softly as her eyes finally landed on her. She was so caught up with her dad being back that she didn't even notice her until her dad drew her attention to her.

"You two know each other?" Clint asked, confused. "Yeah... something like that." Y/n trailed off as her and Kate looked at each other.

"It's nice to see you again." Kate said, scratching her neck awkwardly. "Yeah." Y/n hummed in disbelief.

What were the chances that her dad's new partner was her of all people. "So where did you guys meet then?" Clint asks, breaking the tension.

"At school." Kate replied, finally taking her eyes off Y/n. "Oh you went to Spencer school too? I didn't realise." Clint said. He didn't seem to notice the awkwardness between them at all.

"So you're already friends then I see." Laura butt in. "Not exactly-" Y/n started. She took note of her father's face dropping slightly. He felt like he had ruined his daughters Christmas by bringing someone from her past who she didn't seem to get along with.

"-we dated in high school." Y/n finishes her sentence quietly. Clint looked at her wide-eyed, trying to process the information.

"You're gay?" Nathaniel questioned loudly as he had walked back into the kitchen right before Y/n revealed where she met Kate.

"Nate." Laura said sternly. "What? I think it's cool." He whined as their mother stared him down.

"Mom, it's fine. He was just being curious it's no big deal." Y/n said, looking at her mom.

"Well. Shit." Clint said as he came back to his senses. "Clint." Laura repeated in that same stern tone. "Sorry." He said, looking at her. He knew better than to curse in front of his kids.

He looked at Y/n, his eyes softening around the edges. "Let's not make this a thing, okay?" Y/n said before Clint had the opportunity to say anything.

"Yes, I'm gay. Let's move on." She added. Clint and Laura both nodded slightly with an 'okay'. Y/n shared one last look with Kate before leaving the room.

"Will you two be okay?" Clint asked, not wanting the Christmas Holidays to be ruined by them not getting along.

Kate didn't respond as she stared at the empty spot where Y/n had been. "Kate?" Clint asked, pulling her back to reality.

He repeated his question and Kate hummed. "Yeah I'm fine, as long as Y/n is. I'll leave if she wants me to." Kate said, looking at Clint.

Clint wasn't sure how to feel about the fact that Kate had at one point dated his daughter, which by the looks of it, they didn't exactly end on good terms.

"I'll go talk to Y/n really quick." Clint said, pecking Laura's lips before going into the living room. Y/n was nowhere to be seen, so he went upstairs.

"There you are." Clint said as he found her in her room. "You're so dramatic. You're acting like I went missing. I just needed to use the bathroom." Y/n giggled. She was on the way out of her room to go back downstairs.

"This whole thing with Kate, will it be an issue?" Clint asked as he looked at his daughter. "I thought I said we shouldn't make it a thing." Y/n said.

"Oh. I thought you meant the other thing." Clint grinned. "Look. It's fine. Sure it wasn't what I was expecting for Christmas, but it's all good. We dated. We broke up. It's life." Y/n said.

High school relationships almost never last, especially because Kate was a year older and graduated a year before Y/n did.

They started walking downstairs as they continued talking. "You made it back for Christmas and that's all that matters." Y/n said as they walked into the living room where everyone was gathered, ready to watch some Christmas movies.

Y/n sat beside Lila on the sofa and Kate was sitting in one of the armchairs, petting the dog sitting on the floor beside her. Y/n only now got a good look at the dog.

A few seconds after Y/n sat down, the dog pattered over to her. She kept her gaze on the TV screen until he put his head in her lap, grabbing her attention.

Y/n pet the dog mindlessly as she watched the movie. Kate pouted as the dog walked away, her gaze falling to Y/n as the dog sat beside her instead.

"That's Lucky." Clint said happily as he saw him with his head on Y/ns lap. "Cute." Y/n hummed in response, looking at the dog.

The dog put his front paws on the side of the couch as Y/ns legs were on top of it. Nobody protested the action so he took a chance and hopped up on the couch, laying down on Y/n.

She smiled as the dog plopped into her lap, though she felt a little bad that the dog abandoned Kate to come to her.

Y/n pet Luckys fur as he wagged his tail. Clint watched them before turning his gaze to Kate. Her eyes were fixed in their direction. It only took him a moment to realise that she was looking at Y/n, not at the dog.

He became a little curious to find out what happened between them as Kate still looked at his daughter with complete love and adoration.

Y/n on the other hand just completely avoided looking in Kates direction. She hadn't seen Kate in 5 years and didn't even want to look at her as it reminded her of their time together.

Clint didn't want to pry and make them upset on Christmas, so he decided to hold back on his questions for now and focus on having a good time.

Maybe by the end of Kates visit her and Y/n could reconnect and at least become friends again, assuming they didn't break up for a very bad reason.
