Chapter 57: Dream Vacation Resort

Yu Yangxu led Mu Sheng toward the Yu family villa, walking at a brisk pace. After a while, noticing the youth's unsteady steps, he pressed his lips together and abruptly stopped by the side of the path.

He had been walking fast, and his sudden halt nearly caused Mu Sheng to bump into him. It took a moment for Mu Sheng to gather his thoughts.

Mu Sheng asked, "What's wrong?"

Yu Yangxu, sounding awkward, said, "At your pace, it'll take forever to get there. I'll message the butler to have someone pick us up."

Although the vacation resort was quite large, they had transportation carts available to get around.

Mu Sheng had long grown accustomed to his younger brother's frequent sarcastic remarks, so he stood quietly with a calm expression, not even attempting to argue. The truth was, after walking so much today, he was genuinely a bit exhausted.

Yu Yangxu glanced at the strained look on Mu Sheng's face but held back from saying anything, biting his tongue even though he had more on his mind. He didn't bother explaining the real reason he called for the cart.

After a moment, Yu Yangxu asked, "What did that guy say to you earlier?"

Mu Sheng slowly connected the "guy" with the ethereal, handsome Li Shu, and after a brief pause, he replied, "Nothing much, just a casual chat."

"Don't refer to people like that. It's a bit disrespectful."

Yu Yangxu let out a cold huff, ready to argue that there was nothing wrong with calling that man "that guy." However, seeing that Mu Sheng didn't seem to care much about the earlier encounter, he decided not to deepen Mu Sheng's impression or curiosity about Li Shu, so he swallowed his words.

Suddenly, Mu Sheng asked, "How old were you when Father left?"

Yu Yangxu paused, then replied after a moment, sounding as if nothing was amiss, "Why are you asking that all of a sudden?"

The youth's eyes appeared distant, his delicate eyebrows furrowing as if he, too, wasn't sure how to answer his own question.

He reached up, pressing his fingers against his temple, his fingernails faintly tinted red. "I just suddenly thought of Father, but maybe it's because my health has been so poor recently. When I tried to recall, I realized I don't remember much about him anymore."

Not just small moments they shared, but even their father's face seemed hard to picture. It was as though a thick, grey cloth had been draped over those memories, making them impossible to grasp.

Yu Yangxu's tone was casual, as though Mu Sheng's doubts and confusion were insignificant. "Isn't that normal? We didn't spend much time with him in the first place. It would be strange if you remembered much."

"That man had such an awful personality, with weird tastes too. When he was buried, he took all his belongings and photos with him, leaving us with nothing but a mess. Why are you still thinking about him?"

Mu Sheng's fingers trembled slightly. "He was still our father."

Yu Yangxu avoided Mu Sheng's gaze and the pained look on his face. It was clear that he had a deep disdain for their father, unwilling to even entertain the thought of him.

"He didn't care much for you. Or treat you particularly well. It was like keeping a pet, offering scraps out of convenience. He and... our older brother are both like that." The defiant youth tousled his hair in frustration, unsure why he had to mention that last part.
