Chapter 84: Deep Sea (VIII)
Mu Sheng keenly sensed a shift in Jiu Ningmeng. It wasn't just him; everyone in the room wore a similar expression: their eyes still filled with fascination and longing, but now accompanied by pain and hesitant wariness.
The room had fallen into a near-dead silence, broken only by the sound of the great white shark ramming into the walls of its container, a noise that inexplicably heightened everyone's anxiety.
Two researchers were still paralyzed with fear and indecision, while the cold-faced security personnel pushed the shark's container closer to where the mermaid was held.
Mu Sheng understood all too well what was about to happen. He also realized that the two researchers on site had clearly been "sidelined," with no real authority over the experiment.
Whoever wanted to place him, a defenseless mermaid, in the same tank as a dangerous shark was pulling the strings from behind, issuing orders from a position of power.
As soon as Mu Sheng recognized this, the first image that flashed in his mind was Blair, with his full head of blonde hair and those thin, smirking lips.
The two researchers seemed to have come to a similar realization. The first one who noticed something wrong with the mermaid frowned, as if he wanted to speak to the personnel executing the order, but Mu Sheng could only see the rapid movement of his lips.
The researcher spoke quickly, his expression anxious, but before he could finish, he was pushed aside.
When he tried to approach the tank a second time, the personnel blocking him became much rougher, showing no hesitation despite the researcher's status.
Aside from Blair, there was no one else in this institute with such overwhelming authority.
"You..."
Jiu Ningmeng was also held back, his eyes darting anxiously between the containers that were about to be connected. Suddenly, an idea struck him, and he spun around, rushing toward the information desk.
The container holding the great white shark opened slightly. Perhaps it had caught the scent of blood or human presence because the shark, which had just calmed down, became agitated again. Just the sight of those cold, jagged teeth was enough to send chills down everyone's spine.
The contrast between the aggressive, ugly deep-sea creature and the beautiful mermaid only made the mermaid seem more innocent and harmless. It was difficult to imagine these two vastly different beings ever meeting or living together, let alone envision a great white shark, a creature known for its ferocity, sparing the fragile mermaid.
"You're insane! The research sample is currently in an abnormal state. We cannot proceed with the experiment now!"
No one paid attention to his words, and the equipment continued to operate as usual.
Mu Sheng stared at the terrifying, vicious creature he did not recognize and took a deep breath. His current body was weak, with limited physical strength and mediocre attack capabilities. While he possessed special abilities, he hadn't had the chance to fully explore how to use them effectively.
It seemed he had reached a dead end.
The containment vessel connecting the great white shark to the mermaid's tank was now fully open. The shark, momentarily disoriented by the change in environment, swam in circles like a headless fly, its sharp teeth snapping at the water.
Once it adapted to its surroundings, the next step would be entering the mermaid's tank, where it would tear the fragile creature apart.
Up until now, everything had gone as expected.
