Chapter 85: Deep Sea (IX)
Kwon hesitated as he approached with the box, unsure of Mr. Blair's purpose for bringing the crown. Was it really as he feared?
The mermaid was still a mermaid, and the deep-sea crown had become nothing more than bait for fishing. Yet, the bait was excessively luxurious.
Blair casually picked up the crown, glanced around it, and did not display any particular expression, making it hard to gauge his attitude toward it.
Mu Sheng focused on the crown in front of him; it was the same as before, but its brilliance had dimmed, perhaps due to long exposure away from the ocean, which had drained its energy.
Kwon said, "Sir..."
Blair glanced at his assistant, who looked especially stiff and unusually nervous. "What's wrong? Are you a deep-sea creature too?"
Kwon felt a bitter taste in his mouth. "Of course not." He dared not ask further, nervously clenching his hands and standing to the side, ready to catch the crown if it fell.
Blair smiled slightly and then looked at Mu Sheng. "Do you think that the most important thing in the research institute concerning deep-sea creatures is this?"
Mu Sheng was startled. He had no doubt about the matter, but what did Blair mean?
Blair continued, "When do you think that thing swimming in the institute will come out?"
Mu Sheng looked up in confusion. He initially thought Blair might suspect that he was the cause of the chaos in the institute, but Blair's question suggested otherwise.
The mermaid paused, shook his head, and kept his gaze on the crown in Blair's hand.
Blair said, "Many people have told me that they believe, regardless of the data, mermaids are dangerous high-level deep-sea creatures. Some think you should be released, some think you should be strictly monitored, and some think... you should be transported to a distant inland for 'processing.'"
At the mention of being released, the mermaid lightly swished his tail, but as the conversation continued, the tail's movement became increasingly stiff.
Especially when hearing "transported to" inland, the mermaid felt that Blair's "processing" meant more than just the literal sense. Blair's enunciation carried a chilling sense of something beloved being offended by an unknown entity.
Blair said, "So, Mu Sheng, are you the thing that harmed the researcher?"
The mermaid paused again, blinking in confusion, seemingly not understanding why Blair suddenly brought this up when he had previously asked about the deep-sea creatures outside.
Unworldly, the mermaid could not grasp the underlying human implications.
Blair smiled gently, "Many people want to take you away on the grounds of 'you are dangerous.' If you seek refuge, you must prove to me that you are harmless."
"Or make me see that you are worth my protection. After all, rejecting and stopping so many people is not a simple task for me."
"Do you want to know who just violated my rules and did these things to you?"
Kwon, not daring to move far for fear of unexpected situations, was silent, deeply bowing his head, not daring to reveal any sign of trouble to the mermaid.
The mermaid was still pondering this question, while the large, previously motionless great white shark suddenly began to struggle, its crimson eyes fixed on the direction where Blair stood, showing clear aggressive behavior.
