Hermes was born in Manchester, then he went to the USA. At some point, he enlisted in the US Air Force and received preliminary flight training at New Jersey Air Force Base along with Akeno Keihachi and Marco Flagger. Sometime prior to the New Civil War, Smart achieved the rank of 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to Andrew Air Force Base.
