"Come on girls, let's go! Move it!" Abby screams and we sprint into the studio, "Congratulations ladies, you are undefeated 8 times in a row."
We all clap.
"Not to burst your bubble, but it is only the beginning of the season. A lot of dance studios don't have their competition numbers done yet. At the bottom of the pyramid, Nia. Not so great in the group routine," Abby says.
"Next, we have Kendall," Abby says, "You were good. I thought it was great, I didn't have a problem with you at all. But other people were just better. Next, I have Eva. You looked great in the group, great in your duet, you should be third on the pyramid, but your mother started going on and on about this special part that you were supposed to have."
"No, no, no," Mom says, "You went on and on and made the kids work for that spot. How fair is that, Abby?"
"Oh, it's not fair at all," Abby says, "Next, Maddie. No way you're ever gonna be on the top of the pyramid if you aren't here for all the rehearsals. Next, Chloe. Chloe, you were the overall high score second place. You gave a great performance. Next, Mackenzie. A triple threat, singing, dancing, and acting. You were the overall high score of the mini division by the skin of your teeth."
"On top of the pyramid, Kalani! You were our overall high score winner in the junior category," Abby says and we clap for Kalani.
"This week, we are going to Detroit, Michigan. We will be attending Intensity Dance Competition. This is where the car industry made people millionaires. Then, the depression came and nobody knew what to do. So, we're gonna do a routine and call it Riches to Rags," Abby says.
"My next routine is a duet. Eva, you will be doing a duet with the newest member of our team, Kalani," Abby says, "It's a lyrical piece entitled I'll Be Good."
I smile and hug Kalani.
"Maddie, you are doing a solo. The name of the piece is Timeless because you are timeless. My next solo is going to Kendall. You're doing a pretty lyrical piece entitled Battled Feet. My final solo is going to... Eva. You are doing a contemporary piece entitled Counting What Ifs," Abby says.
I smile and nod.
"Can you explain to me why- where Kalani fits if she can't go up against Maddie for the number one spot?" Kira asks.
"Kalani was brought here to dance with my Maddie. Not to go up against my own students," Abby says.
"You put her against Chloe last week," Christi says.
"I did and look what happened," Abby says, "I've learned from my mistake. I'm never gonna do that again."
Oh she will. I'll probably be going against Kalani next week.
____________
Group RehearsalWe start to learn the group dance. It's basically about us having been rich and now we are poor because we lost all of our money. I really like it.
"Kendall, you start, then Eva," Abby says.
