"It's not that Ms. Jin isn't allowed to visit, but today is just not a good day. Neither is transferring her—she's weak, and it would be too taxing on her. Surely there are plenty of matters awaiting your attention at the Yu Corporation. You're not planning to start an argument with me here, are you?"

Pei Ya smiled politely, almost as if graciously seeing Jin Ya out.

Jin Ya stood still, frowning for a few seconds, knowing there was no point in pressing further. She turned and left. Pei Ya straightened from where she leaned against the door, walked alongside her, and with a playful glint in her eyes, offered, "I'll see you out, Ms. Jin."

Jin Ya ignored her until they entered the elevator, when she spoke abruptly, "What exactly happened between Ran Ling and her?"

Pei Ya replied, "It's quite a long story. Perhaps, one day, Yu Ting will be able to tell you herself."

"All you need to know is that she's safe with Xiao Ling now, and nothing bad will happen to her."

Jin Ya's voice turned icy. "And you're the one guaranteeing that? I find that hard to believe."

Pei Ya laughed lightly, "I suppose I can't really make such a guarantee."

What would it matter if she could guarantee it?

And what if she couldn't?

Pei Ya didn't care either way.

Whether Yu Ting lived or died, whether she was sane or tormented—what did it matter to her?

But her eyes held their usual amused squint as she added, "Still, Ms. Jin, you can rest easy. Xiao Ling is already in touch with her doctor."

The words "Ting Ting"—Ran Ling had practiced them over and over last night. She thought her pronunciation was finally decent.

Would Ting Ting like it?

Yu Ting froze for a few seconds, and in those few seconds, Ran Ling couldn't guess what she was thinking. She simply looked into her eyes, took in her appearance, and found herself wanting to kiss her.

Unable to resist, she lowered her head. But Yu Ting immediately turned her face away, rejecting her. Worried about Yu Ting's neck wound, Ran Ling supported her face, halting her own advance.

They stayed locked in that standoff, and a nervous Ran Ling felt compelled to say something. She opened her lips, struggling to push out the words, "Ting Ting, I..."

But Yu Ting closed her eyes again, speaking faintly, "I want to break up with you."

"I never want to see you again."

Ran Ling froze, feeling a sharp sting in her chest. She pressed her lips together and, after a moment, gently placed Yu Ting's hand back under the blanket. Turning away from the bed, she walked to the window, looked at the fragrant sachet she'd prepared for Yu Ting, then tucked it away.

Her elation, once soaring, was now crushed under a heavy weight. Suddenly, she felt no desire to speak anymore.

Her voice must sound terrible, right?

Leaning against the window, she contacted Yu Ting's former primary doctor, holding her phone with a slight bend to her neck, her posture weary and defeated. Once the call ended, she shut off her phone. Her gaze drifted back to the bed, and she watched time slip by, barely noticing when Dr. Xu arrived.

The doctor evaluated Yu Ting anew, concluding that she was currently in a depressive episode.

In her condition, she was like a wounded bird, barely alive, uninterested in speaking or moving, unwilling to eat, unresponsive to others, not even resisting.
