THIRD PERSON POV
The morning air felt different. The usual chatter of students filing in through the school gates didn't quite reach Lauren's ears. Her heart was too heavy, her mind too occupied with a thousand thoughts she couldn't push aside.
It had been months since her younger brother, Maki, had died. At first, it was believed to be a suicide. But was it really? Maki/Ralph was Maloi's girlfriend, and her older sister, Lauren, couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. As Lauren delves deeper into the circumstances surrounding her brother's tragic death, she uncovers the shocking truth: Maki wasn't a suicide victim. Someone had killed her.
Despite having different fathers, Lauren and Maki share the same mother. Lauren's father is Korean, while Maki's is Filipino. Growing up, Lauren was raised in Korea, where she became the student council president at her old school. She always wanted to return to the Philippines, feeling a pull to reconnect with her roots. Her Korean father, however, had moved her to Korea when she was nine. It was there that Lauren first learned about her younger brother, Maki, through overheard arguments between her parents. She discovered that her mother had an affair with a Filipino man, resulting in Maki's birth, which ultimately led to her parents' divorce.
Despite the tension between her parents, Lauren's father reluctantly agreed to let her and Maki spend time together from time to time. But when Lauren's father decided it was time for her to focus solely on her studies, their connection was severed. Now, in the wake of Maki's death, Lauren returns to the Philippines, enrolling in Maki's school to uncover the truth and solve the mystery surrounding her brother's untimely passing.
On her first day of school, as the teacher introduces her to the class, Lauren steps into a new chapter of her life, unaware that this is where everything will begin to unravel.
As she stepped into her new classroom, she quickly realized that she was no longer the student council president of her old school in Korea. Here, she was just another new kid. Her eyes scanned the classroom, feeling the awkwardness of not fitting in yet.
The teacher, Ms. Maria, stood at the front with a welcoming smile. "Alright, class, settle down!" she said, and the room quieted. "We have a new student today. Let's all give her a warm welcome."
Lauren stood up, straightening her uniform. "Hello, everyone. I am Lauren D. Kim. I hope we get along," she said, bowing slightly—a gesture she couldn't help but make from her years in Korea. It was just the polite thing to do.
