THIRD PERSON POV
Manila. 4:32 PM.
The rain fell in heavy drops, soaking the pavements and blurring the campus buildings into watercolor. The library steps were crowded with stranded students, but Maloi stood a little further, under her clear umbrella, headphones in, lost in a mellow indie playlist and the quiet chaos of the afternoon.
Then she saw her.
A girl stood alone under the open sky, the only one not rushing for shelter. Her long hair clung to her cheeks, her uniform sticking to her skin. She held a book to her chest like it could keep her warm — Wuthering Heights, ruined and dripping.
Reisha Xu.
Maloi didn't know her name then. All she saw was a girl who looked like sadness had made a home in her eyes.
She didn't think twice.
She walked straight into the rain, holding the umbrella above them both.
"Hey." Her voice was gentle. "Mababasa ka. You'll catch a cold."
The girl looked up, startled. Her eyes — dark brown, almost black — searched Maloi's face like she didn't know whether to trust kindness.
"Basa ka na rin," Reisha said softly, stepping away. "You don't have to po."
Maloi shook her head. "It's okay. I hate seeing books ruined. Especially that one."
Reisha looked down at her soggy copy and gave a small laugh — the first sound of warmth. "It's my favorite."
"Same," Maloi smiled. "Pero di ko gets kung bakit sobrang dramatic nina Cathy at Heathcliff."
"They loved each other. Sobra. Kahit ikasira nila."
Napatingin si Maloi. "Naniniwala ka sa ganun ka-intense na love?"
Tahimik si Reisha sandali.
"...Gusto ko."
Tahimik ulit. Pero 'di awkward. Tahimik lang, parang safe space.
"I'm Maloi," sabi niya, breaking the silence.
"Reisha," sagot ng girl. "Reisha Xu."
Ngumiti si Maloi. "I'll walk you to your dorm, Reisha Xu. Kung okay lang."
Maloi finally spoke. "I'm Maloi."
"Reisha," she replied, with a small, unsure smile. "Reisha Xu."
"I'll walk you to the dorms, Reisha Xu. If that's okay."
Reisha nodded.
And just like that, under a cheap umbrella and a ruined classic, something began. Neither of them knew what it was yet — only that the rain no longer felt cold.
