Kai's POV
It's usual business as always. I run a pack of 640 and a chain of hotels and restaurants all across the US so I haven't gotten much sleep. My sleeping schedule is lost on me these days and having the added stress is...shit. So far this last month has exhausted me and the last thing I want to be doing is branding a treaty with a pack that shows nothing to its name. Its value of commitment and leadership is meaningless if the Alpha prefers to play nasty instead of helping their own people achieve goals and respect boundaries. I've been in meetings all week and the last thing I want to do is to be at River Crafts Pack discussing more business with them.
"Mr Rhodes?"
"Yes? Sorry, I'm running low at the moment. What did you say?" I ask Alpha Kade.
"I was asking if you had thought more on the treaty. We've been good connections to each other packs for decades now and we have yet to form any sort of alliance"
Meet Alpha Kade. Alpha Kade is one of the most stubborn yet not needed Alpha this land has to take. I travelled 3 hours for this. 3 hours from my home comfort to meet such an entitled prick. His father stepped down from what my information tells me and he took over a year ago with the late guidance of his father, Eddie but even now as I watch him...he has no idea what to say or do without squirming in his chair.
He's been running the show on the outside for recognition. However, if I looked closely at how his father still remains in the office - shadowing his every move, calculating his actions and most likely trying to piece together what mess he will have to pick up - I'd see that on the inside he is no match to be an Alpha. Not even close.
"Tell me. What's the probability that you would run into such unchartered territory that you'd need-" Counting down the list I manage to find 7 Pack names. "7 Pack lands to help you out?"
I'm 28 and I'm the oldest of the three of us. There's me, my brother Alexander who is 26 and then there's Ella who is 16.
My parents the previous Luna and Alpha, Maeve and Daniel, taught me from a younger age all there is to know to be a true leader. I had classes when I reached my teenage years and trained to be somewhat of a warrior beforehand with my brother. We led several classes as we got that little bit older but then I had to be more careful with my time and where or what I did which is why when I turned 18, I was able to start taking over gradually and by the time I was 19 I was a leader to over 600+ members to a pack.
"I don't follow?" he says as I eye him carefully. He really doesn't follow where I'm going with this.
"How old are you?" I ask. A change in the subject because I want to get a picture of how old he is before I start firing off multiple questions about how he can't run a pack without his father's know-how. I've seen him over the last hour, how he sweats...A lot when a question gets asked or when he looks like he's about to be sick or how he fidgets when he's trying to think of an answer instead of knowing it off the top of his head and answering it proudly like an Alpha should.
"26" he says raising his shoulders as if that's going to do anything.
"Okay. Well, I've noticed a fair few things while casually sitting here Mr Harrison."
"Like what?"
"As an Alpha, you're expected to be learning how to run a pack from an early age and with how you keep glancing back to your father for approval it seems that he's still running the show on the inside and showing your inability to do it on your own. I have also been watching how you can't sit still for more than 3 minutes and how you have to look down at your clamped hands before thinking of answering a question I ask. I have been running my pack properly since I was 19 years old and I have never needed to be guided at the age of 28 by my father. I have been on this earth 28 years and I have been trained from a young age in keeping things on the straight and narrow" I say as I look to his father who only looks away.
What a bunch of cowards this pack has.
"I'm sorry but you come here and tell me how to run my pack? Who do you think you fucking are?" he asks and that's when my patience snaps.
"Kade" his father seethes.
"Mr. Harrison," I say looking to his father and smirking. "I can't thank you enough for your hospitality but this isn't going to cut it. If your son has to have multiple packs for protection then I would consider forcing his hand down until he can manage the pack but in the meantime, I would also suggest that he rein in his temper because that's going to get him a whole good of nowhere and I wouldn't want to see his downfall happen so early on after taking over" I say while glancing back to the son.
What an idiot.
"Kai," the idiot son says and I snap my head to him. Not even my pack members call me by my name unless I'm really close to them.
"Alpha! It's fucking Alpha no matter what. We are not friends. We are not beneficially acquainted as you would like to think Mr Harrison and I sure as fuck don't like cheeky, rude little shits who believe they are the king of the kingdom when daddy still has the reins in hands" I tell him and walk towards the door.
"God, now I know why they call the heartless devil" He mutters clearly not thinking I could hear him.
Spinning around I push him up the wall by his throat and grind my teeth together until I feel the pain in my jaw. "They call me that for a very good reason, now if you're done with your little boy tantrum I suggest you stay quiet! I don't appreciate being talked down to no matter where I am. I should have the respect I showed you when I entered your lands" I sneer at him. I would like to assume he isn't brave enough to carry on with his little tantrum and I am proven right when he surrenders and bows his head to me.
Dropping the little shit I storm out of their office but not before hearing his father berate his son for his stupidity and insolence. I pull out my phone and dial for my brother.
"That was quick" he says just as I pull up Midnight pack grounds on my satnav which is only 40 minutes away from here.
"Didn't go through with it man. Daddy still has hands in the work and the son is useless. I fucking hated it there" I tell him as I pull out of this car park.
"Where are you now?" he asks.
"Heading to Midnight pack. Have you got everything sorted there?" I ask him while flicking my blinker on to turn left. Everything usually goes smoothly when the other team plays the ball properly.
"Yeah man, got our rooms on top floor. Alpha Hayes is decent and he got us the top floor. His sister doesn't live here and her room is the only one on that floor. It's a mix of colours and all sorts and yes I looked because he showed me" he laughs.
"Right, well I'm not that far away" I tell him and then I hang up the phone and continue with the drive to tonight's adventures.
