The way Luna spoke the words rattled Klaus. He'd heard her say them many times before, each time differently, but now there wasn't a part of him that doubted her determination to try, 'I tried before. I don't mind going for round two.' She spat through gritted teeth.
Luna brushed past him and found herself in front of the dresser, digging through the drawers like the conversation they'd had meant nothing to her.
Regret had already engulfed him long before Luna set foot in the house, but the one thing he hardly felt was fear. He spoke confidently, 'I'm going to prove you wrong, Luna.'
The zipper of her dress rang through the room rather than words. And even with her back to him, he could hear the roll of her eyes and the way she bit her tongue while contemplating her next words.
She let the dress pool at her ankles, and pulled a black shirt over her head, 'Don't try to turn this into something noble. I already said I don't care.'
He wanted to assure her, but there was only so much he could say before it sounded empty. His words were already falling on deaf ears, and the sudden calm she'd adopted had been enough to clamp his jaw shut.
Klaus didn't move for a moment, aching to hear her voice ring through the room again, even if it was just to yell. But it didn't.
Though leaving was the last thing he wanted to do, when he watched her peel back the duvet and climb into bed without peering in his direction, her answer had finally hardened within him.
It seemed out of character for her. Why wasn't she angry? Why didn't she ask more questions? Any question she asked, regardless of how tiresome it would be to answer, he would've.
A lack of curiosity had escaped Luna; She would always dig for answers in a spot that wasn't hers to tamper with. But suddenly, now, she's able to close her eyes and sleep like a child ignorant of the world around her.
So for yet another night, Klaus turned out of the room and left Luna to sleep in an empty bed.

While Luna had grown bored of searching every corner of New Orleans, day in and day out, she refused to give up. The Gemini were resilient and naturally secretive, which made tracking them feel like trying to catch a phantom.
Every shadow still made her flinch, every stare was still a threat. She'd chalked it up to her issues, and she let the anger she felt reverberate with every footstep, hoping it would ward off whoever might be preparing to attack.
As she walked, the stillness in the air and the crowds that barrelled through each day seemed to reassure her that nothing would go wrong. But the longer she strolled through the streets without a care, the more her mind screamed for her to be vigilant.
