Chapter 134

Zatariel point of view

Because inside the freezer-

A.

Human.

Head.

My brain stopped functioning.

"AAAAHHHHHH!!!!!"
I screamed.
Violently.

And then-
Two hands landed on my shoulders.

I screamed again.
"WHAT-?!"
Laughter.

I turned my head slowly.

Margery.
Actually laughing.

"Oh my God," she said between breaths,
"your face-"

I couldn't speak.

My heart was still trying to escape my body.

"What is WRONG with you?!" I finally snapped, voice slightly unstable-purely temporary.

She laughed harder.

"I didn't expect you to fall," she admitted.
"That made it better."

Traumatize your brother.
Very entertaining.

"That is a human head," I said, pointing toward the freezer without looking at it.

"Explain."

"It's clay," she said casually.

I blinked.
"...No."

"It is," she insisted, still smiling like a villain.

"My latest project."

Your-
I stared at her.

Then slowly... slowly turned my head back toward the freezer.

It was still there.

Too realistic.
Uncomfortably realistic.

"...That is illegal levels of talent," I muttered.

Margery grinned.
"I know."

She reached down and pulled me up like nothing had just happened.

My legs still felt slightly unreliable.

"This is not normal behavior," I informed her.
"You need a psychiatrist."

She ignored me and casually shut the freezer door.

"Maria," she called.

Maria appeared almost instantly.

"Please remove my project before Dad becomes the second victim," Margery said.

Maria nodded, completely unfazed.

As if removing a severed head from the freezer was part of her daily routine.

Margery started guiding me out of the kitchen.

Halfway to the door, I glanced back..

Just once.
The image was replayed in my head.

Too detailed.
Too real.
Too-

"...That was not clay," I said quietly.

"It was," Margery replied smoothly.
I looked at her.
She smiled.
Unbothered.

...

I chose to believe her.

Because the alternative-
Was deeply concerning.

And I prefer my reality stable.

"I've lost my appetite," I announced.

"Understandable," she said, still amused.
