"Well?" the person behind us snapped with a loud growl in his voice, and I couldn't help but roll my eyes and scowl. "What the fuk is going on here? Why the hell are you two out and about after hours? You two should be in bed asleep."
"See what I mean?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I looked at Silas, ignoring Cooper's questions. "Us Pierces like to appear when our names are called, even when we are not needed." I gestured toward Cooper, and he growled in warning and while he narrowed his eyes.
"Kyler," he warned and bared his teeth in warning, not liking the fact that I was ignoring him. "Why the hell are you out and about at a time like this when you should be asleep?"
"Well, so should you, Cooper," I retorted back, not looking at him. "But here we are blessed to be in each other's presence, even though we both despise each other's beings." I rolled my eyes and turned to look at him to see that Rhett was there with him.
Cooper growled and narrowed his eyes while he grabbed something tighter in his hands, something that had caught my interest instantly.
Was this the reason as to why I had heard my mother's voice..?
"What's that?" I asked and stared at the small square device that Cooper clutched in his hand. "Is that a tape recorder with a recording of my mom's voice?"
Cooper grabbed the thing tighter but not enough to break it and stared at me with a hard look in his eyes. "It's nothing for you to worry about, Kyler," he said coldly and bared his teeth in warning. "Drop the subject."
"But I heard my mom," I said, trying but failing to keep my voice level. I cleared my throat when my voice cracked, and I blinked back some tears that wanted to fall. "I want to know if that is the reason why. Please..."
"No," Cooper said and shook his head, and my heart seemed to break into a million pieces. "That is not why you heard her voice. Hasn't her voice changed over the years, especially since she is older, or have you been lying to everyone and to yourself?"
I gave him a weird look and shook my head without saying a word before I looked at Rhett to see that he was staring at me with a sad look on his face. "Were you trying to get him to go to bed?" I asked and raised an eyebrow in question while I studied him. "Is that why you are still up, too?"
Rhett shrugged and offered me a small smile, and pain and sadness flashed through his eyes. "I was checking the borders and making sure that we were safe," he said, and Silas grew tense while his heart skipped a beat before it started to pound hard and fast in his chest.
I ignored Silas and raised an eyebrow in question while I studied Rhett with a small frown on my face. "Where were you checking the barriers?" I asked, growing interested. "Did you find anything interesting?"
"I was checking on the south side," Rhett said, ignoring the annoyed look from his Alpha for answering my question when I didn't answer any of his questions. "I didn't find anything interesting, which I am grateful for because I do not want to have another eventful night."
"Another?" I asked, growing curious, and he nodded. "What happened? Because most of the stuff that had happened with me was during the day or late in the afternoon, so what happened in the evening? I'm sure that it was something that happened before I was here."
"It was," Rhett said and nodded in confirmation, earning a warning growl from Cooper. Rhett bit back a tired sigh and looked at him before he looked at me with an apologetic smile on his face. "Unfortunately, that is all that I am allowed to say, so I hope that you can forgive me."
I shrugged and looked nonchalant, not even caring that he wasn't able to give me that information because I had a feeling that I would be able to find some other information somewhere else.
