Chapter Two

I don’t know how I did it, I avoided Zeke all day, but he wasn’t around all day anyway because he was getting thing signed by teachers all day. I walked home, happy to have some bit of silence. I know, I have Zeke’s car, but since we broke up it didn’t feel right to drive it anymore, so it sits in the garage all day collecting dust.

I walked into my house chucked my bag into my room and then walked into the kitchen, but stopped at what I saw Claire and Pommy. If you remember properly, Pommy is Harriet's older brother. He came back here when he found out about Claire being sick, and it literally took then a month to get back together.

“For once I’d like to come home and not find you two making out,” I said, walking past them to the fridge.

They broke apart and Claire looked at me. “What’s with you?”

I didn’t answer, and I turned away from them and opened the fridge.

“Oh... wait, doesn’t Zeke come back today?” Pommy asked softly.

“Oh,” Claire said softly. “That was today. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I insisted, turning around to face them.

Claire gave me a look but I couldn’t take it seriously when she was sitting on Pommy’s lap. I usually saw them together, okay, scratch that. I always saw them together. Pommy moved in a while ago now. It was about the time my Dad got offered a better job and now he’s either halfway across the country, working night shifts or sleeping. I knew that Pommy only moved in so Claire wouldn’t have problems looking after Tara and me, when really he just distracted her. Also, you’re probably wondering about her cancer. Well, it was brain cancer, which meant it was a tumour, and her treatment was currently ‘do-nothing’. They doctors decided the tumour wasn’t too big and she might get lucky and it might not grow. She goes in for monthly check-ups and so far so good.

“You know if you want to talk, we’re here for you,” Claire said.

“I’m fine,” I said again, hasher.

“You’ve been saying that for the past two months, I still can’t believe you,” Claire muttered.

“Well, that’s your problem,” I shrugged.

“Would you stop with the attitude?” Claire snapped, jumping up off Pommy.

She gave me a harsh look and Pommy immediately reached out and grabbed Claire by the waste. The only thing with Claire’s cancer was sometimes when she got too angry, too stressed, she couldn’t handle it. She’d get dizzy, sick, but she hadn’t fainted in a while. Pommy was very protective of her because of that, and always made sure he could calm her down, like he would now. I went to open my mouth to speak, but she wouldn’t have heard me anyway because the front door suddenly slammed making all of us jump.

I turned around to see Tara walk straight past us and up the stairs.

“What’s her problem?” Pommy asked.

“It’s Blake’s and hers anniversary,” Claire told him.

“But they broke up,” Pommy said.

I rolled my eyes. “That’s the point.”

“Oh,” he mouthed.

“No,” Claire shook her head. “There’s something else.”

“Since when? She’s upset, she has been for the last three weeks,” I shrugged.

“It’s not just Blake,” she muttered. “She’s not telling us something.”

“Well, that’s a first,” I said sarcastically, sitting on the stool near them.
