Chapter Thirty Three

Harriet’s P.O.V

I stood at the doorframe of Alex’s door as she rushed around the room shoving clothes into her suitcase.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” I asked Alex.

Alex stopped and ran her fingers through her hair and looked up at me. “Yes,” she responded. “I need to get away just for a little while... a week in Florida will do both me and Zeke.”

“You’re going to miss your own birthday,” I muttered.

“I won’t miss it... I just won’t be in town, and I’ll be with you,” she shrugged.

“If you’re sure,” I said.

“I’m sure.”

I shrugged slightly and then heard a sound coming from the stairs. I turned to face them and so did Alex. At on second I’m seeing Tara sprinting up the stair, holding her slightly rounded stomach, and then the next second she’s pushed past me made her way to Alex.

“How dare you!” Tara screamed, suddenly slapping Alex.

I stepped forward as Alex fell back onto the bed but Tara didn’t move so I stayed where I was.

“How dare you sleep with my boyfriend!” Tara screamed.

“He wasn’t your boyfriend at the time,” Alex whispered.

“He’s your friend, he was still my ex! I love him!” Tara screamed at me.

“I’m sorry, Tara, I am so sorry it happened... he was upset, we were both drunk,” Alex said.

“That’s no excuse,” Tara said.

“Not an excuse? How did you get pregnant? Cause I know you weren’t just venerable,” Alex said darkly.

“Don’t you dare go there,” Tara said in a low voice.

“You have every right to be mad at me, but you have no right to come in here and tell me that things like this don’t just happen, that makes you a hypocrite,” Alex said, standing up.

Tara stood there for a moment, breathing heavily for the moment and then without warning attacked Alex. Alex grabbed hold of her arms and the both fought with each other, trying to get a slap or whatever they could in. I jumped forward and grabbed hold of Tara’s arm and tore her off Alex.

“You should leave,” I said to Tara.

Tara looked slightly at Alex and breathed. “You’re dead to me.”

She broke out of my grip and then walked out of Alex’s room. I turned back to Alex who stood there rubbing her cheek for them moment.

“Are you okay?” I asked her.

“I’m fine,” she muttered. “I probably deserved that.”

“What happened between you and Blake...” I started to tell her.

“It was my fault, Harriet,” she insisted. “I can take back what I did... You should go home and get your bag. I need... I need to see Blake before I leave, check he’s okay. We’ll meet back here in half an hour with your car, okay?”

Zeke’s P.O.V

I was angry. I was hurt. I was... disgusted, confused, upset, you name it, I felt it right now. What Alex had done, what she had told me, why she had broken up with me it was... confusing. We never lied to each other, and if anything like this ever happened... I just guess she’d tell me, not lie about it.

I needed to clear my head; I needed to stop thinking about Alex. I needed to think straight... I thought a walk at night could help. It was cold, like it always was at winter, although it wasn’t cold enough to snow.... actually it never really snowed here... but I was still rugged up pretty tightly. I somehow managed to associate Alex with cold... her birthday... that’s next week.

No, no more thinking about Alex. You can’t think about her, you can’t love her... wait, what was that?

“Help!”

Oh, great now I’m hearing Alex’s voice. I’m officially going insane.

“Somebody please help me! Get your fifthly hands off me!”

Okay.... maybe I’m not going insane... maybe she really needs help...

I wasn’t taking any chances and sprinted off in the direction of her voice. I ran, until I caught sight of something that made me stop dead in my tracks.

“Zeke!” Alex cried, seeing me. “Please.... help me.”

Tears streamed down her face as Austin had his arms wrapped around her, pulling her, hurting her.

“What are you going to do, Price?” Austin asked me. “This little bitch slept with my cousin, she doesn’t love you, so it’s only fair I get my turn now.”

“No,” Alex moaned. “Please, Zeke.... please do something.”

I couldn’t move. My brain was stuck in a mini fight.... I was trying to figure out what to do.

I have to help her

She deserves what she gets

She doesn’t deserve this

She slept with Blake!

Doesn’t mean she should be raped by Austin

He’ll teach her a lesson

For crying out loud, man, you love her!

“Zeke.... please, please, don’t let him do this to me,” Alex begged me.

You still love her!

I jumped forward, a rush of adrenaline kicking in. I grabbed Alex, but didn’t manage to break her out of Austin’s grip. I took my first punch, aiming right for his jaw. He was shocked by the force and all at once let go of Alex and she fell to the ground with a thud. He was angry though and it didn’t seem like he was letting Alex get away so easily. He took a swing at me, but I reached up and caught his fist, and before he knew what I hit him, I aimed low, winding him in the stomach, before completing my beating by adding a nice swift kick to his balls.

Austin let out a cry of pain and fell to the floor. I turned to Alex and picked her up of the ground and dragged her away with me. I was just going to get her away from the creep and then leave her alone. She was safe... that’s what matters.

I realised her when we were far away from Austin, and intended to just walk away, but Alex’s voice held me there.

“Zeke,” she called after me.

I sighed and turned around to face her.

“Thank you,” she whispered. “For a second there... I thought you were going to let him have me.”

“For a second... so did I,” I muttered.

“Zeke, I am sorry,” she said, stepping forward.

I took a step back and she sighed and stayed still.

“I’m going away,” she told me.

“What?” I frowned.

She nodded slightly. “Florida one week... my uncle’s beach house.”

“But school,” I muttered.

“I can survive without one week of school, and Harriet will be with me,” she told me. “I just think it better for both of us if we’re far away from each other... somewhere where we can both think straight and can’t bump into each other.”

“Yeah,” I agreed.

She nodded slightly and then sighed before turning around. Every part of me wanted to stop her, grab her in my arms and hold her, but I didn’t stop her. Instead she walked off into the blackness. There was still one thing I couldn’t get over... the one thing that made me save Alex. I still love her.
