Chapter Three
My locker had become one of my best friends. It didn’t talk back to me, it didn’t try pushing me away, or moving away from me.... it just kept all my belongings safe. I sighed and pulled out my science text book and swapped it for my mathematics text book. I wasn’t really paying attention to what I was doing, I was too busy flipping through my science book looking for some notes.
“Alex?”
I jumped like crazy. My book went flying out of hand and whatever notes I had stuffed in the book went flying everywhere and landed on the floor. Everything else happened quickly, like my breath disappearing, my heart racing at a hundred miles per hour, and my palms sweating. Zeke stood in front of me, and it was hard to contemplate all that was going on. I hadn’t seen him in two months, and this was the reaction I was left with? Something was terribly wrong with me.
“Are you... okay?” Zeke asked slowly.
“No,” I breathed out, turning back to my locker. “I thought I told you not to talk to me.”
“About a month ago,” he muttered.
“Nothing’s changed,” I shrugged.
“So you plan to avoid me?” Zeke whispered harshly.
“Yes,” I answered.
“I don’t understand, Alex,” he told me. “You said nothing to me after that call. You said it was over and then the only time we talked was when you told me not to talk to you.”
“Yeah, and you could’ve told me then you were moving back,” I said, looking at him.
“I didn’t know then,” he argued. “Please, Alex.... can we just talk about this properly?”
“I told you, there’s nothing to talk about,” I shrugged. “I...I don’t have feelings for you like I used too.”
“I don’t believe that. Not for one second,” Zeke hissed. “There’s something you’re not telling me, there’s something you’re not telling everyone, and I will find it out.”
“That’s not the reason you came back, right?” I asked, slightly scared.
“No,” he shook his head. “No, but when my father told me that we were coming back, I thought of you, okay, Alex? I thought I could fix things.”
“None of whatever happened between us is your fault, Zeke,” I said. “It’s my fault, okay?”
“Hey, Alex,” someone said from behind me.
I turned around to see Blake standing there and I have never been happier to see him in my life.
“Hey,” I sighed.
“You... promised... study, library, like ten minutes ago,” Blake said.
“Oh, right, free period, science exam... study stuff,” I said slowly. “Let’s go.”
“Hang on,” Zeke said, grabbing my arm. “I’m not done talking to you.”
I turned back to Zeke and gave him a look. “Give me five minutes, I’ll catch up to you,” I said to Blake.
I saw the look he gave me as I walked away. I turned back to Zeke and sighed slightly.
“What?” I asked him.
“Why are you hanging out with him?” he asked harshly.
“He’s my friend, he was when you left and that hasn’t changed now you’re back,” I told him. “If that’s all you have to say...”
