Epilogue: 5 years later
(Third Person)
Alex never thought this day would come. The day Zeke had proposed to her seemed so long ago, and the actual marriage part of it almost seemed like it would never happen. Now though, Alex stood in the bathroom, staring at herself in her white wedding dress. Nerves were threatening to control her and had to let them sub-side.
Alex flattened her red hair, a more natural colour now than it had ever been, and ran her hand over her dress. She saw her ring sparkle in the corner of her eyes and held it back up to her face and smiled. She was marrying the love her life today.
“Alex, can you come out now?”
Alex turned on the spot, and reminded herself she couldn’t lock herself away in a bathroom and freak out, she did actually have to get married, it wasn’t going to happen without her doing anything.
“Just... just give me a second,” Alex called back.
“I want to see what you look like,” the voice begged.
“Harriet,” Alex sighed. “You’ve seen me in the dress before.”
“I know, I know, but now it’s different,” Harriet said.
“No, it’s not,” Alex replied.
“Please just get out here now!” Harriet yelled in frustration.
Alex rolled her eyes at her best friend’s enthusiasm. She walked over and opened the bathroom door and Harriet immediately laid her eyes on her and sighed.
“Oh, oh you’re so beautiful,” Harriet said, looking like she might cry. “I can’t believe you’re getting married soon.”
Alex smiled and felt the butterflies in her stomach again. “Neither can I,” she admitted.
“Oh, I never thought this day would come! You were in England for so long I thought you two were never coming back. Four years you were gone and then you come back and tell me I’ve got a year to help you plan your wedding,” Harriet babbled on.
“I know, I know,” Alex said calmly, “but I knew you could help me organise it in time.”
“I know, admit it, I’m the best maid of honour ever,” Harriet smiled.
Alex rolled her eyes once more. “You sure are.”
Alex and Zeke had spent nearly four years in England. Alex had completed her scholarship and once she had Zeke had surprised her by saving up enough for them to travel around Europe. It was there while in Paris, together they decided they would go back home and get married. More than anything, as much as they loved Europe, they wanted to be home with their family and friends, and be the ones they love once they finally got married. Upon returning to America, Zeke surprised Alex more with a small house his father had purchased for them, it was Alex’s dream house.
The door to the room they were in suddenly opened and two people entered, and both stopped when they saw me.
“Oh my god, look at my little sister!” Claire cried, running forward and pulling Alex into a hug.
“I don’t think I’m much of your little sister anymore,” Alex told her.
“Oh, I know, but still,” she said.
Alex pulled her back and noticed her short hair again. The treatment for Claire’s cancer had of course made her lose her hair, but lately there had been no sign of the cancer, and her hair was slowly growing back. It was the news Claire had needed to hear for a long time.
