Chapter Fifty-One

I woke up in the awkward position of myself in Zeke’s arms. I groaned a little and looked down almost surprised to see that Zeke and I were both wearing clothes for once, but then I remembered, we’d stayed up talking and my guess was we just fell asleep. My plan was to just slip out of Zeke’s arms, since he was still asleep, but the moment I moved he jolted awake and he sighed.

“Sorry,” I muttered.

“Hmmm,” is all he said.

I sighed and let my hand slide down his chest; he caught my hand and groaned.

“I need to go to the hospital,” I told him.

“I know,” he said, eyes closed.

“Zeke,” I groaned.

“Alright, alright,” he said, loosening his arms around me.

I rolled out of the bed and stood up and searched for some clothes.

“Babe?” Zeke said, still no movement from the bed.

“What?”

“You going for a shower?”

I smiled slightly. “You really never give up.”

“Nope.”

We were at the hospital within a couple of hours. When we walked towards Tom’s room, we all stopped. Harriet beside me stiffened the most. It was her parents... her parents were here. Her parents couldn’t get here for their own son’s wedding... God knows what they’d dropped to be here. Harriet had been living here with her parents for ages.... I don’t think she knew how to react.

“Harriet,” her mother said.

“Mum,” she said slowly.

“We should leave,” I said to Zeke, and gave a look to Kane.

Kane looked back to Harriet and her parents. For the first time Kane was meeting Harriet’s parents, he used to all say how he never had to meet them, so Zeke and I were a little surprised when he stayed.

When Zeke and I went down the hall to the rooms we were told my Dad was asleep, so we decided to see Claire. She was of course awake, sitting on her hospital bed with the TV on.

“Hey,” she smiled, but it was a fake smile that made me frown.

I walked over to her bed and sat in front of her. She didn’t say much to me, but I knew what she was thinking.

“Tom?” she whispered.

“I haven’t seen him this morning... I came straight here. His parents are here,” I told her.

“Great... just what we need,’ she muttered.

“We can keep them out if you want,” I suggested.

“It’s fine... I haven’t talked to them before a while,” she said.

We talked a little more, Zeke sitting awkwardly, slightly staring at the TV. I hadn’t eaten all day and but the time the afternoon came I was staring, but I didn’t want to leave Claire alone, in case Tom’s parents walked in.

“Babe?” I said, looking over at Zeke. “Do you want to go get some food?”

He looked happy that I said something so he didn’t just have to seat there.

“I would love to get you some food,” he said. “What do you want?”

“Anything, you know what to pick,” I told him.

“Can he done,” he smiled.

He walked over to me first and pressed his forehead to mine.

“Thank you,” he whispered, “and keep talking to her, its helping.”

“I know,” I nodded.

He kissed me quickly before we walked out of the room and I turned back to Claire.

“What was that?” she asked me.

“Oh... I... I didn’t tell you,” I bit my lip.

“When?! When did you two get back together?” she asked me.

“Like, a couple of days ago,” I shrugged. “I just forgot to mention it because of everything else.”

“Hmmm, because that’s not important,” Claire said sarcastically. “Alex, are you sure it’s going to work this time?”

“We’ll we have sorted things out, and I think it’s going to be different this time. Claire, please don’t worry about.”

“Fine, if you’re sure,” she said.

“I’m sure.” I nodded. “I love him.”

“So you finally said it, I see?” Claire smiled. “I’m proud of you.”

After Zeke came back with some food and we ate for a while, we decided we should leave; I said a quick say hello to dad and then left the room. I held Zeke’s hand as we went to walk outside the hospital. Zeke hadn’t said much, and I haven’t mentioned anything Claire said. Harriet and Kane were still with Harriet’s parents, and Zeke and I just decided to go back to my place.

I stood in the kitchen at home and Zeke walked in and looked at me and sighed.

“You look better today,” he said.

“What?” I muttered.

“You don’t look as sad,” he whispered, stepping up beside me.

“I know this is going to sound crazy,” I whispered slightly, “but tomorrow.... I think something good is going to happen.”

“Why do you think that?” Zeke asked me, slowly bring up his hand to move my hair away.

“I don’t know,” I admitted. “I just... I just feel like, like something will make everything better.”

He smiled and nodded, and started to play with hair, just watching me.

“What?” I whispered.

He shrugged, but smiled.

“What Zeke?” I asked harder.

“Harriet and Kane aren’t coming tonight, are they?” Zeke asked.

I narrowed my eyes. “No, why?”

“We... well we finally have alone time,” Zeke muttered. “And I know you haven’t wanted to, since then-.”

“Yes,” I whispered, before he could finish speaking.

“Yes?” he frowned, but excitement in his voice.

“Yes,” I nodded.

I slipped away from Zeke and grabbed his hand and pulled him slowly behind me. I glanced back at him to see him smile. When we reached my room, he spun me around and put me in his arms. He pressed his forehead to mine. I know that we’d done this since I had said the L word, but now we were actually together, it felt different. It felt perfect. Zeke pressed his lips to mine and I felt a tingly feeling, the fireworks when we kissed, something that had never gone away, and I hoped it never would. Everything was almost perfect; all that is missing is the fairy tale for Claire and Tom.
