Chapter Forty Two

Zeke’s P.O.V

I was starting to like this. I think I could live with walking up every morning to seeing Alex’s face. As strange as it sound waking up to see her face and just watching her sleep was actually calming.

I rolled over slightly and moved her hair slightly out of the way, and just at my touch she groaned slightly and rolled over towards me. She didn’t wake up though and I sighed and lied my head down on the pillow and just sat there.

As much as what happened hurt me, there was just so much past me that said I couldn’t get past the fact that I loved her. Hearing those three words I literally waited forever, I knew then, forgiving her would almost no be needed.

I touched her hair again and moved it away from her face, only this time, it woke her up. She rolled over slightly towards me and opened her eyes and smiled

“Hi,” she whispered.

“Hi,” I smiled, still playing with her hair.

She kind of just smiled at me and then frowned.

“What?” I asked.

“You distracted me,” she said.

“Distracted you?” I asked confused.

“That’s how we ended up here... you distracted me from what I was talking about yesterday,” she said.

“Well... I told you, I forgive you, what did else did you want me to do?” I said.

She shrugged slightly and rolled over into my arms.

“Can we just stay here today?” she moaned.

“I wish,” he whispered, and continuing playing with her hair. “But I’ve got a test today, and my dad is pretty proud of me and how I’ve been doing in test, and I don’t want to let him down.”

“Crap, my dad,” Alex muttered.

“What?” I asked confused.

Alex rolled slightly out of my arms so she could look at me and sighed.

“Jet told me the other day that he caught my father and his mother... kind of hooking-up. Okay, not kind of, up actually hooking-up, and well I thought it was best to confront him about it,” she shrugged.

“Wow,” I mouthed. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?”

“No,” Alex admitted. “I don’t, but she is the only other woman my dad has really been involved with. I mean, after my mother, the thought of another woman never crossed his mind, but now it’s another woman that he’s been with before... it could change things.”

“Are you worried about it? I mean, maybe this is good for him. We’ve both lost our mothers and we’ve seen the effect that this has on our fathers, and has much as the thought of my father being with another woman, sometimes I think it’d be better for him. He might not be so lonely,” I told her.

“I... I do agree with you, about the lonely. I just have a feeling this isn’t going to be a relationship... a little less like us, if that makes sense,” she said.

“I think I do. I think you’re saying, they’re kind of just going to hook-up, end of story,” I said.

“End of story,” she agreed.

Alex’s P.O.V

I entered that house after Zeke had gone to school. I had a free this morning so I planned to go later Since I had been disappearing every other night, but eventually coming back, my dad had got to a point of where if I came home with no cuts and bruises he wasn’t going to question.

“Out for another late night I see.”

I didn’t even get the stairs to chuck my stuff. My father was sitting on the kitchen bench with a cup of I believed to be coffee in his hand. He drank a lot of coffee, especially in the winter.

“Yeah... I just-,” I started to explain.

“Ah, I don’t want to know, you’re alive, that’s what matters,” he said.

I paused for a second and thought about questioning why he didn’t want to know, but decided to stay on my original line of questioning.

“So... um, Jet dropped by the other day,” I said, walking into the kitchen and dropping my bag and jumper.

“He did?” he asked, barely looking at me.

“Yeah, he did... and he told me something, and well after all of it tend to believe him,” I shrugged.

That’s when he looked up at me, and I felt some nerves set in.

“What did he say exactly?” he asked.

“He told me that... well he walked into the... Emily’s hotel room the other day and caught you two, like... you know. Oh, god, don’t make me say it,” I groaned slightly.

“Ah, you don’t have to continue, I know what you’re talking about,” he told me.

“Oh, good,” I nodded. “Do you have anything to say? Anything to explain... or talk about it?”

“I’m not sure what you want me to say,” he said.

“Really I mean... not even an explanation. Like ‘oh, Emily and I are together,’ or even ‘I didn’t mean for that to happen’ or just a ‘she was a booty call.’ Something, anything,” I said.

He looked at me kind of shock. Maybe it was my use of the words ‘booty call’ in a sentence.

“I’m starting to recognise you again,” he whispered.

“What?” I asked confused.

“I’m seeing the same daughter I’m used to again,” he said.

“I... don’t distract me, Dad. Just tell me what’s going on,” I said.

He sighed slightly, but smiled. “I’m not really sure. And even if something is going on, I don’t want to take over Claire and Pommy.”

I paused and then ran my fingers through my hair; I understood exactly what he meant.

“Are you two like seeing each other?” I asked awkwardly.

He curled his lips together. “Alex, if you’re worried about me replacing you mothe-.”

“No, no, I’m not worried about that all. That was sixteen years ago and I barely remember her. I want you to be happy,” I told him.

“It’s a complicated situation,” he said.

“Dad, I know about complicated situations, I know complicated better than you understand,” I said.

“Alex, what you think is complicated and I what I think is complicated are two very different things,” he muttered.

If only that were true. I honestly knew exactly what he was going through, it was basically the same between Zeke and I right now, but I couldn’t really go say that, could I?

“So... that’s it?” I asked him.

“That’s it,” he agreed.

“Okay,” I muttered, picking up my stuff, and then going to walk out, but my father said one more thing.

“Alex... I hope you stay like this, like the daughter I raised,” he told me.

“I can only try.”
