Chapter Forty Nine

I sat leaning against the wall, Zeke on one side of me, his hand entwined in mine and Harriet on the other side, her head lazily resting on my shoulder. None of us said a word, and although I knew Harriet was dying to ask about Zeke and I she didn’t say a word.

“Hey.”

We all looked up to see Kane and Harriet kind of lifted her head up but yet again there were no words.

“I’m going to get some drunks and stuff, someone want to come with, or do you guys just want anything?” he asked.

“I’ll go with you,” Zeke said, then  squeezed my hand so I’d look at him. “Do you want anything?”

“Just some water,” I muttered.

“Harriet?” Zeke asked.

“I’m fine, thanks,” she whispered.

“Okay, I’ll be right back,” Zeke promised, kissing me on the cheek, then jumping up and following Kane down the corridor.

Harriet and I sat there in silence for a moment before she finally lifted her head of my shoulder.

“So,” she said.

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you,” I said quickly. “It was just when you asked I really didn’t know what was going on, I mean I thought I did, and it wasn’t until later did I really understand, and even now I’m a little... disorientated.”

“I’m not mad... surprisingly,” Harriet added. “At first I thought I would be, but then I realised that... I’m happy for you two. You need someone right now, and as much as the Zeke and you thing cause this big problem, you two are actually perfect for each other. I swear, there are no two other people that go so well together.”

I laughed slightly. “I almost screwed up the best thing in my life. It’s kind of like you and Kane.”

“Yeah, kind of,” she agreed.

“Tom will be okay,” I promised.

“I don’t want to talk about Tom right now.”

“Sorry,” I muttered. “I’m scared to you know.”

“I know. We’re all scared,” she said.

I sighed and looked down at the floor.

“Do you really think it’ll work this time, between you and Zeke I mean?”Harriet asked.

I shrugged a little but also nodded. “Things are different, for one he’s not in a different country anymore... we won’t be so far apart.”

Harriet shook her head at me with her lips curled together.

“What?” I frowned.

“England,” she whispered.

I felt my heart sink. “I forgot.”

“Obviously,” she said.

“God, what am I going to do? I mean... I don’t know even know if I’m going. To tell you the truth, I haven’t actually made a decision,” I said.

Harriet sighed. “Tell Zeke first then... maybe he can help?”

I nodded and I leant back against the wall and Harriet turned to me.

“Promise me one thing,” she said.

“Okay, what?” I asked her.

“No matter what happens, what happens to Tom today, what happens between Kane and I, you and Zeke, or if you go to England, promise me that we will always be best friends, we’ll always talk to each other, tell each other everything,” she said quickly.
