Chapter Thirty

Alex’s P.O.V

Christmas was awkward. It wasn’t a big Christmas, it was a family thing. It was just me, my dad, Claire, Pommy, and for dinner Jet and his mum. It was surprising that my dad and Jet’s mum got along so well. Through most of dinner they talked, mentioned things about ‘old-times,’ there was no stopping them, they just kept talking. It kind of reminded me of how Jet got on. It made me believe that we really were a family for once. Right now, it seemed like the one thing that was going on with me, my family. Claire and Pommy were happy, and were about to become really happy. I liked having Jet as my brother, because to me he was a brother, a perfect brother. The only thing was Tara. She was about five months pregnant now and was struggling with a lot of things. My father supported her now, and so did Blake’s and she spent a lot of her time there. They were looking at adoption right now, and once I had looked over some parents with them.

So for the rest of the week after Christmas, leading up to new years I hid away from everyone but my family. We often had breakfast with Jet and his mum, and it made us really seem like a family. Jet’s mother was nothing like a mother to me... I mean, I liked her. She was fun, nice, and wasn’t like the wicked-witch of the west like I imagined.

So Harriet didn’t hate me so much, I promised to help her with her new years-eve party, but because Jet, Tara and Blake were coming they had to early with me, and Blake did have a car so he could drive us there..

“You’re late,” Harriet told me as I walked through the door.

“Blame Blake,” I said. “He forgot to fill up the car with gas.”

“I’m sorry,” Blake said. “I didn’t realise.”

“Obviously,” I muttered.

We went upstairs to the top level of the café where the party would be held.

“Wow, it’s a lot different to what I remember it to be,” I said.

“You haven’t been up in here for ages,” Kane said, appearing from a back room.
“Yeah,” I nodded, mainly because I had always avoided remembering what happened up here on the balcony.

“The good news, there are no longer any holes in the floor which anyone will fall through,” Harriet said, walking past me.

“That’s always good,” I heard Jet mutter.

There was a lot of food I helped put out. I then went down the street with Kane to get drinks and by the time we got back everyone was arriving. I didn’t realise it was so late already. I walked back inside and almost walked into Zeke. Great, now it’s awkward.

“Sorry,” I muttered, as the music started to play around us.
“For what?” he asked me.

I sighed. “All of it.”

“Thanks,” he muttered. “Um... had a good Christmas?”

“Look, Zeke, you don’t have to start a conversation with me. I think it’s best if we just stay away from each other unless we need see each other,” I shrugged.

“If that’s what you want,” he said.

“Yeah, yeah, it is,” I nodded.

“Okay then.”

He walked away leaving me kind of just staying there for a second. It only took a couple of seconds for Harriet to find me.
