Chapter Eighteen
Alex’s P.O.V
I didn’t get much sleep last night. I mean how could I when Zeke was asleep in my room while I tried to sleep awkwardly on a couch. I just wanted to shut my eyes, drift to sleep and pretend last night didn’t happen.
“Alex.”
I jumped at the sound of my name and sat up to see Tara standing in from me. I sighed, I couldn’t sleep here. We were at the doctors, well the clinic or whatever for Tara so she could get an ultrasound. Blake was here too, and at first I had protested to coming, but eventually Tara convinced me otherwise.
“Come on,” Tara said.
I stood up and followed Tara into the doctor’s room where I sat on a chair next to Blake. Tara sat on the bed and the doctor walked in. He sat there explaining things to her, but to be honest I wasn’t listening.
“Alex,” Blake whispered.
“What?” I jumped slightly.
“Is everything okay? You said you’d be home early last night, but I left pretty late and you weren’t there,” he said.
“I got held up,” I said plainly. “Not drinking though, but I should be mad at you for telling Zeke.”
“So he did show up?” Blake guessed.
“He did more than show up, Blake. He tried to get into a fight again,” I muttered.
“He hassled me about where you were, so I eventually caved,” Blake shrugged.
“You seem to cave to a lot of things,” I said, turning away from him.
“And that’s meant to mean-?” Blake started to ask.
“Blake,” Tara said to him. “Come look.”
It was nothing to exciting inside her, well except the baby of course, but it was still so small that they couldn’t even tell what gender it was. I walked outside with Blake and was about to get into the car when my phone buzzed. I pulled out to see a text from Jet.
“Um, I’ll catch you guys later, okay?” I said to Blake and Tara.
“Where are you going?” Tara asked confused.
“To see Jet. It shouldn’t take too long, don’t worry,” I yelled after them as I walked away.
I met Jet on the pier. He was at the end leaning against the railing. I walked over to him and leant against the railing next to him.
“I don’t think I can do it,” Jet said.
“Do what?” I asked him.
“Go to that thanksgiving dinner. Meet your father,” Jet said.
“He’s your father too,” I whispered. “I thought you wanted to meet him.”
“You don’t understand, Alex, it’s not that simple,” Jet complained. “My whole life nothing has ever felt complete. I’ve always wanted to meet my father, I’ve dreamed about him being some hero, but he’s not what I expected him to be.”
“How exactly?” I frowned.
“When you said that in order for me to alive your father had to cheat on your mother... and you talk about how you always fight with him. I wanted him to be perfect, but I expected too much,” Jet told me.
I sighed and turned to face Jet.
“I know my family isn’t perfect, and my dad certainly isn’t perfect, but we’re still a family. That’s what you want. Our family isn’t perfect, but I think its better that way,” I shrugged.
“So you’re family has never been perfect?” Jet asked.
“Of course we’re not, and that’s exactly why I love my family, and exactly why you’ll fit in,” I told him.
“Do you want me to be part of the family?” Jet asked slowly.
“I’ve always wondered what it would be like to have a brother, even if you’re only my half-brother,” I half-smile. “And yes, our family does not need any drama right now, but I think my father will want to know he has a son. He’s always wanted a son.”
“He has?”
“Yeah, he said he’d always love his little girls, but he always wanted to know what is it was like to have a son,” I shrugged. “Jet, no one else could fit into our family like you will.”
“In that case... tell me about your family.”
Harriet’s P.O.V
“What are you doing here?” I demanded.
“We need to talk,” Zeke said, stepping into my house.
“Zeke this isn’t a good time,” I complained.
“It’s never a good time,” Zeke said he walked to my bedroom.
“No, it’s a really band time. Don’t open the door!’I yelled at him.
Too late, Zeke had opened the door to my bedroom and I saw him take one look in and then turn around.
“You could’ve just said Kane was asleep in your bed,” Zeke said to me.
“Well, come on,” I complained. “I mean, you were going to find out if I said Kane was in my room... half-dressed, you just found out the less dignified way.”
“Well,” Zeke said, shutting the door. “We can just talk in the kitchen?”
“Good idea,” I nodded.
I followed Zeke to kitchen where he sat down on one of the dining table chairs. I sat across from him and waited for him to speak.
“So?” I asked him.
“Right,” he nodded. “Well, last night... I kind of got knocked out and Alex took me back to her place, because.... well I was knocked out.”
“Knocked out by who?” I asked confused.
“Buff,” he answered.
“Oh... right. Continue,” I told him calmly.
“Well, we talked... and this time it wasn’t arguing why we talked... we actually properly talked,” he explained.
“And now you’ve come to me because you don’t understand what’s going on anymore,” I guessed.
“She was so.... Alex. It was the way I remembered her, the way I want her to be,” Zeke complained.
“Zeke, if you weren’t one of my best friends, I’d tell you, you are completely pathetic,” I told him, “but since you’re one of my best friends, I’m going to tell you this. Now Alex has opened up, she’s going to feel weak, and I’m sure you thinking she’s now venerable. Well, even if she is, all it takes is one little thing to send her spiralling back into that shell. You need to lay off for a little while.... no more hassling, just... background attention.”
“That’s easier said than done,” Zeke muttered.
“Zeke, you don’t have to see her until Thursday at that thanksgiving thing. Just don’t go see her in the next six days,” I shrugged.
“But-,” he started to complain.
“I know, I know. It’s hard to not see her for that long, and you’re a wimp, “I interrupted him, “but you asked for my advice, and that’s my advice.”
“Okay, fine... but you’re if this doesn’t work...” Zeke said sternly.
“I know, I know,” I nodded. “You’ll be very upset.”
“Damn, right I will.”
“You are so pathetic, Zeke.”
Zeke just pulled a cheesy grin at me. “That’s why I’m so loveable.”
