Chapter Fifteen

Harriet’s P.O.V

“You’re right,” Zeke sighed, suddenly standing next to me by my lockers.

“Right? About what?” I frowned.

“Alex... this patrol thing isn’t going to do anything,” he said.

“Wow... back up. Not only did you just admit I was right, you admitted you were wrong,” I said slowly.

“Yes, Harriet. Can you just tell me what to do?” he groaned.

“Okay,” I said, shutting my locker. “Keep the Kassidy stuff up though... getting any emotions out of her is good, but back off slightly. Be that guy in the background that will jump out and help when she needs it, don’t overcrowd her with protection, because I know you, that’s exactly what you’ll do.”

“Anything else?” he asked.

“Not really... just that she might be drinking this Friday, so maybe you could just drive past,” Harriet hinted.

“Will do,” Zeke nodded. “Thanks.”

Alex’s P.O.V

“What are you doing?”

Jet jumped and shut the file he had on the table. He turned to look at me and sighed slightly.

“Nothing,” he told me.

I frowned and sat on the table across from Jet. I saw how he protected the file that he had shut. He kept his hand on the top of the file and I looked back at him and pretended not to notice.

“Why are you in the library?” I asked him.

“Studying,” he shrugged.

I sighed, this wasn’t going to work... let’s go with oldest trick in the book.

“Look over there!” I said, pointing behind him.

Thank God it worked, he turned his head to look behind him and before he could turn back I grabbed the file and pulled it away from him.

“Alex!” he yelled at me and tried to grab it back.

“Shhhh.”

Jet and I both turned to look at the librarian who had her finger over her month and we both shut out mouths and she walked away.

“Give it back,” Jet muttered.

“What is so bad about this file that you don’t want me to see?” I asked, sliding it onto my lap.

“You’ll think I’m a creep,” he admitted.

“You can’t be worse than Austin,” I told him.

“No, trust me,” he muttered.

So he just made me really curiously so I put the file on the table and slide it back over to him. He looked at me confused but put his hand on the file.

“Don’t make me regret what I just did and explain to me so I don’t think you’re a creep,” I said calmly.

He looked like he could do a runner but he sighed and opened the file. He flipped through the sheets and then handed me on. I didn’t really read it, I just glanced at one big word across the top of page.

“My last name,” I whispered. “This is about my dad.”

“I know,” Jet nodded.

“This is like my dad’s history. Where’s he travelled to, where he works, when he got married,” I said slowly, and then turned over the page. “This is about me.”

He curled his lips together. “Yep.”

“How did you get this stuff?” I asked.

“I know someone who is good at hacking computers,” he shrugged.

“Okay... but more importantly why do you need this?” I said slowly.

Jet sighed and took the page back off me and then handed me another one.

“Why did you just give me your birth certificate?” I frowned.

“Read it,” Jet told me.

I read through it quickly... learning that Jet’s middle name was Theodore, and his mother’s was Emily.... and his father’s was... David Rodes?

“I don’t understand,” I whispered. “It says that my father is your father.”

I looked up at Jet who was watching my reaction but I wasn’t sure how to feel. It was confusing... and I guess it didn’t feel real.

“I’ve been looking for my father for a long time, and my mum hid my birth certificate in the hope I would never find it... and him, but I when I did and I looked up your name, I found you. You were mentioned on your school website so I followed it until I found the connection with your dad... and I decided that I wanted to meet him and I all I could think to do was go to the school and meet you first,” Jet explained.

“Because I’m your sister,” I whispered.

“Half... sister,” Jet corrected me slowly. “Alex, are you okay?”

“I’m not sure,” I shook my head slowly. “I’m... shocked.”

“I know this is a lot to handle and I wanted to tell you at the right time... maybe have told your dad first-,” Jet started to say

“When is your birthday?” I interrupted him.

He frowned at me. “December tenth, why?”

“You’re a month older than me,” I whispered.

“Alex-,” Jet tried to say.

“He cheated on my mum.... with yours,” I said.

“Alex, it was seventeen years ago.”

“And my mum is dead now... he slept with your mum, came back and slept with mine.”

“Come on, Alex, just down.

“Jet, this is crazy. Are you sure about this?”

“Yes,” he answered. “Why do you think I came here? I checked and double checked. I knew it would be hard for your family to accept, but I was kind of hoping it’d work.”

“Jet, you came at a really bad time... if you didn’t realise our family isn’t quite put together. My dad hates me, Claire has her cancer check up tomorrow, Tara is pregnant... I know you want to meet your dad, but do you think you just keep it to yourself for a little while?” I asked.

“Alex,” he groaned.

“Jet, please... I’ll literally give you anything else you want, but this... meeting my family, it really needs to wait, I’m sorry,” I told him.

“Just promise me you’re not freaking out,” Jet said.

“I need time to process it,” I said, “but I won’t freak out. Wow... I have a brother.”

Jet laughed at me slightly and I gave him back the birth certificate and I stood up.

“I’ll talk to you later,” I said and then went to walk away but stopped and turned around. “Thanksgiving is next week and we’re having a family, friend get together thing and you should come.”

“Thanks, I’d like that,” Jet nodded.

“See ya,” I muttered.
