Mr. Christensen walked the length of his class hearing them play superpower from Beyoncé with orchestra and choir. He had gave the assignment to Zayra and Thomas they were his strongest students. The piece was to be performed for an assembly. He had given them other song choices, they were not happy with his song choice.

Zayra argued for them to choose the song. They wrote a list of songs, narrowed it top 5. Mr Christensen had final say on the song. He had chosen Superpower for its message. He especially liked how they arranged the song. Zayra was excellent in finding their strengths and weaknesses. She'd coach them, pass the advanced ones to Thomas and himself.

She had everyone enthralled. She'd move from one instrument to the next with ease. She'd start singing, change the notes to experiment. He loved it. Thomas was also a strong musician.

He played the piano and sang. He was quick and quirky, had a different angle to music. Together they were a perfect pair. They quickly learned to read each other. Facial expressions, hand signals, coded language was either made up or quickly adapted as their way of communicating.

Thomas wasn't as patient with the ones who struggled. So they would start with Zayra. They'd practice sometimes an hour after class had ended. She captivated them, her energy, her drive and talent. She was balsy too. Cursing, flipping people off, throwing people out if they started interrupting. Wednesday was the only day she couldn't stay after class.

She had confided that the court ruled mandatory therapy and anger management. She had been going for 3 weeks now. She was still angry, the classes weren't even registering to her conscience. She once mentioned that she would literally sleep with her eyes open. She thought it a joke. As for her therapy. She was tight lipped about that.

They finished up and clapped. "Good job you guys. It's getting better and better." Zayra was clapping.

Everyone gathered their stuff while talking amongst each other. This had become their routine.

"Zayra are you going to Joe's birthday party. I heard Anomaly is playing?"

"Yeah, they're opening for D.J Wreck ."

"Yeah, I'm excited. Angie's been talking non stop about it. I'll see you there." Angie's friend waved goodbye.

Zayra grabbed her bags and was waving bye to Thomas and Mr. Christensen who were looking over the music sheets. "See you tomorrow."

They waved and smiled. Zayra turned and saw Ryan standing by the door waiting. Zayra wasn't surprised. She had stopped riding home with Emily and Josh a while back. She had caught the bus a few times, enjoying the solitary among the many. Everyone in their own zone, evidently invincible.

He smiled at her. She was remembering when he had caught Zayra on the bus stop once. He had offered her a ride and she had refused. He had gotten pissed.

He happened to be dropping off a friend home when he turned and saw her standing with others waiting for the bus. He even parked his truck, trying to make her go with him.

"Come on Zayra I'll drop you off."

"It's cool Ryan I don't mind the bus."
