Zayra was with Thomas practicing for the song choices they would perform for prom. Ever since she returned from Florida after spring break they would stay practicing almost two hours after class. Mr. Christensen didn't mind.
His wife had died a long time ago and his kids were old and had their families. Besides watching them brought fire back in him. He missed this. He was sad to know that in a few months, they would graduate. He hoped they kept in touch. Some of his old students kept in touch through social media.
They were practicing a song from Groove Theory called Tell me. It had a funky jazz beat. He liked how they arranged it. They were doing two songs together. The other song was One Love from Macklemore.
He let them choose the songs this time. They were ready, prom was in a couple of weeks and saw everyone's excitement. It was the mark of the end of the school year. Well almost.
He saw Josh walk in and sit on a chair waiting for Zayra. He usually home right after school. Zayra noticed him and told Thomas they'd meet up tomorrow. She waived at Mr. Christensen and made her way out with Josh.
"Zayra, grandpa wants to talk to you."
She noticed Henry waiting in the car. She had ignored some of his calls. She knew court was scheduled a week after prom.
She said hello and entered the car.
"Zayra. You haven't returned my calls."
"Take a number." she mumbled.
"What?"
"Nothing. What's up?"
"I just got the report from your therapist." he looked at her through the rear view mirror. "It's not good Zayra."
She bit her lip.
"Everyone is worried about you."
She stared out of the window.
"You don't have anything to say?"
"It doesn't matter, anything I say doesn't fucking matter right?"
"Yes it does matter, we're trying to help you."
She scoffed. "Yeah by shoving more therapy on me."
"You need it Zayra."
She flinched.
He tried finding patience. "Listen I have good news. I know you wanted to go to Peru for Rudy's birthday. I got you a 4 day pass Zayra. That means you show up and you leave right away. You can't fail this because the chips are stacking up against you kid, you don't need more grief." his eyes sincere.
She breathed in and out. Rudy had called inviting her to his house for his birthday, he was turning 17. She promised to try.
"Thank You."
They drove in silence the whole ride.

At practice Josh noticed Zayra's turmoil. Her face mirrored his internal emotions. He wished he could help her but he was dealing with his own shit. He needed to talk to her. Both of them needed to voice out what ever demons were plaguing them. They practiced the songs that they were going to play at prom.
Ryan was relatively quiet, watching Zayra. Angie had wrote a few songs and was asking Zayra for a hook. Zayra strummed the guitar and began to sing. Angie wrote it down as they fiddled with notes and other instruments.
"So when are you leaving back to Peru?" Angie asked her after they were done.
"I leave this Friday morning. I'll be there Friday night and leave Sunday early morning."
