How many times have you seen a character, especially a villain, fall to their deaths from a cliff? If your answer was at least ten times, then you have just figured out that this plot device is a cliche. This really overused plot device has been used as a cheap way by authors to save the audience from too much gore, by simply sending a character down a cliff to die offscreen. As effective as this plot device can be (just watch "The Lion King" or "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" to see what I mean), by now it has been too overused. It is not the worst cliche in the book, but it is one you definitely should avoid if you want to write a great story.
