By suggesting that all happy endings are cliche, I mean that as much as we love to see the hero win, it is predictable plot wise for it to happen. Most people watch a movie or read a book series knowing this, which can slightly lower the quality of both media. In these stories, the best remembered parts are the ones where unexpected twists occurred, or when the hero did not end up winning in the end. The happy endings just sort of get blocked out. Therefore, surprising the audience with a different type of ending, which could be bittersweet or even sad, is the smarter idea story wise. However, don't think happy endings are completely forbidden. Having one once in a while is definitely refreshing and stops you from making the sadder endings cliche.
