Interesting fact; did you know that mermaids throughout most of history have been portrayed as bloodthirsty creatures? Yep, before the time of movies such as the Little Mermaid, this was what mermaids were portrayed as in folklore. The basic characteristics of mermaids were simple. They were beautiful women, with musical voices that could easily attract sailors. After luring a sailor to them, the mermaid would attack the sailor and then kill them for no reason whatsoever. It was a simple but scary idea that explained the disappearances of ships during the 15th and 16th century, which most of the public had knowledge on. Surprisingly though, few writers ever have done anything with this side of the mermaid folklore. They instead focus on the cliche idea that these creatures are innocent sea dwellers who fall in love with a human and then sacrifice everything to be with them. Well I say, maybe it is time to look back at the folklore and add a mermaid as a possible horror themed character. It would be a nice change from the usual vampire, werewolf, or zombie stories that have taken over the supernatural genre as of late. That is, if people are willing to give this idea a try.
