As a believer of ghosts, I can safely say that this cliche is false and pretty stupid. Ghosts are just human souls that haven't passed on yet, and share the same emotions they had when they were alive. They are basically the collection of memories and thoughts a human once had before they died. There are going to be some evil spirits, but there are good spirits as well. A balance of the two kinds of ghosts would therefore be really welcome in literature as a change from the idea that ghosts are untrustworthy.
