Do you remember one of the first vampire themed novels, Dracula?  If you don't, then here is a little refresher.  The novel was written by the late Bram Stoker, about a satanic vampire known as Count Vlad Dracula.  Dracula was based off of one of the most evil men in history, a Turkish ruler notoriously known as Vlad the Impaler.  Vlad the Impaler used wooden stakes to kill thousands of innocent men and woman, sometimes even dipping bread in their blood.  His horrific nature transported right to Dracula, who would charm his victims with compulsion before drinking their blood until the victim died of blood loss.  He brought fear into the hearts of millions like the sociopath he was hugely based upon.
With that in mind, how did authors go from making vampires a figure of fear to softies?  Vampires are not sweet like most modern fantasy books or movies may tell you.  They are neither romantic figures in the slightest.  Like Dracula, they are the living dead, usually rooming the Earth without a soul.  This reverse image of the modern vampire has become a downgrading cliche, so much so that people are growing sick of vampires.  It is a shame, considering what interest these fearsome creatures could once put on people.
