Having a damsel in distress, a female character whose only role is to be rescued by the hero, is one of the oldest and most offensive cliche in the book. Basically, it designates all female characters as weak and fragile, while the male characters are seen as the ones who must protect them. Girls are seen only as a prize to be won by the hero, which in my mind really needs to change. Why can't both genders play the role as the person to be rescued, instead of just girls? Also, when the damsel is in danger, wouldn't it be cooler if at least she tried to fight back or escape the struggle all by herself? I'm not asking for a dominance of feminism in literature, but instead an in-between. After all, we are all equal as human beings.
