In a lot of romance novels, it is considered romantic when some guy watches you sleep. For some reason, authors use this plot point as a way to show the devotion a character has towards their love interest. While this tactic is perfectly fine in the fictional world, it isn't in real life. In real life, that is extreme stalking, which could land that person a hefty fine, a restraining order, or even jail time. Also, it is so cliche to use this point point in the first place, which quite honestly is very uncomfortable to read again and again. Why can't these feelings these authors are trying to portray be established through conversation or actions the characters do to protect the ones they love? Making your character a stalker definitely isn't the answer.
