What I mean by episodic is lasting only an episode, a book, or an entire movie in a huge franchise. Whenever a villain is only designated for one of the three examples, the story becomes predictable and everyone knows they are going to lose to the hero. As weird as this may seem, this cliche is quite common and in my opinion needs to stop. To keep the audience invested, creating a main villain for an unknown length of time for a storyline is the best course of action. No one will know whether the hero is going to win or lose, and more twists can be created in the process.
