"Oops. Wrong toaster. Hey Cap, welcome home, how was the alien invasion?"
"Wrong toaster? Why was your explosive toaster in the kitchen instead of the lab or better, in the explosives testing areas?" Steve replies dryly with just a touch of sarcasm.
"I don't know, honestly. I thought my prototype was still in the lab; oh no, the prank war. Gosh darnit! Some one could have been hurt!" I turn on my teammates emerging from the kitchen, "That prototypes was a dangerous piece of equipment not yet tested and someone could have been hurt! If, if I wasn't there... someone could have died! And it would have been my fault! The toaster, my toaster, it could have killed someone, I would have their blood on my hands."
I look down at my hands, I can almost see her blood on my hands. I scream lookin down at the blood on my hands. I take off and hide in the wind tunnel, in my little nest, tuck my knees into my chest and cry. The vent opens and two figures emerge. Loki and Nat. Loki, the only one who knew where I was hiding and Nat, actually I dunno why Nat.
She sits down next to me and puts an arm across my shoulders. Loki leaves, uncomfortable with my display of emotion. Nat stays and I cry on her shoulder. We talk. She begins with, "I have red in my ledger..."
By the time we finish talking my tears are dried and I can see that it wasn't my fault, that no one was actually injured or killed. I'm still trying to come to terms with the death of the light queen. Killing never leaves you, you just learn to handle it. Sometimes you have no choice, sometimes it's the right thing to do or the only thing you can do to protect people. I feel better after our talk and venture back to my room and sleep.
