Chapter 44 - "Happy Fricken New Year..."

'You looking forward to it?'

'I am actually. Thank you so much for putting me forward for this' Clara said rather excited about the prospect of getting to work at the hospital.

She has always wanted a normal job with normal people to work with instead of being stuck in dead end shit.

'You'll be my hot Doctor that I can have a one to one with' John smirked, dropping Clara's hand.

'Why'd you let go?'

'Well people know we have a baby together, and will assume that I got you the job but I don't need to make anymore speculation. At least not until I know what this is' John smiled. 'No offence but you did screw me over once before'

'Okay. Fair point' Clara chuckled, as he dragged her round the side of the hospital before going in. 'What?'

'I got you a good luck present. It's kind of a good luck on your first day kind of thing' John smirked, handing her the box, to which Clara gasped.

'Oh my god' she squealed.

'You like?'

'I love it. Thank you so much. I've never had my own stereoscope before. This is amazing' she said leaning up to kiss him.

It was safe to say that keeping the relationship on the down low was going to be a difficult thing to do.

They are definitely in the honeymoon phase of their relationship, barely being able to keep their hands off each other. They had spent the entirety of January on top of each other - very literally - spending every moment together that they could.

John kept saying that it was just so he could see his new son - but they both knew it was about the amazing sex as well - of course they are far more aware of protection in their haste now.

Adie went to school as normal now they had started work again on this February day and the two little ones went to the same nursery.

'Come on. We're going to be late' Clara smirked. 'Don't want to be late on my first day' she said walking away.

'Technically I'm the boss so it won't matter. But I see your point' John smirked, as Clara headed towards the Emergency Department and John went to get coffee and a muffin.

'So I assume her being here is your doing' Rory snapped as he stepped into John's office and shut the door.

'Ever heard of knocking?' John spat.

'Well?'

'You would assume right. But it's not changing anything. So what? She needed a job and I needed a registrar'

'Only because you sacked the last one'

'In my defence the last one couldn't even do a simple task of a chest drain. I have a little more faith in Clara' John winked, checking the theatre list for the day. 'Why is theatre 2 closed?'

'There's a major motorway accident coming in. It's going to block up beds left, right and centre. Theatre two is for emergency electives' Rory said.

'We've got a major accident coming in? How many people?' John asked.

'12 at the moment but could be more. It was a double decker bus crash so it's still to be confirmed'

'Right. Let's announce emergency protocol then' John nodded, rushing out of the office and gathering staff. 'We've got a major accident coming in this morning. We're expecting 12 so be prepared for over 20 casualties. Martha's will be in theatre 1 and I'll take theatre 3. Nurses take their instructions from Rory and any major casualties come by me' John announced. 'Clara your in charge of the ward'

Clara's eyes widened. It was her first day. She couldn't seriously be left in charge of the ward could she?

'John' Clara asked running after her and following him to ambulance control. 'You can seriously expect me to be in charge of the ward on my first day? I've got no idea what I'm doing'

'Hey. I trust you. If you've got any problems just run them by me or Martha. You'll be okay' John smiled, as the first ambulance pulled up.

Clara really wasn't sure that she could do this but wanted to prove not only to herself but to John as well that she could do this. That she could do a proper job.

It all got a little hectic quickly.

John was right when he said over 20 patients because of turns out that they took 23 patients, but it wasn't that bad because there as only two that were critically injured, leaving Clara alone for no more than a few hours.

After that she stuck to Martha like glue trying to pick things up and sticking to easy tasks.

She wasn't worried. She knew she would get the hang of it at some point, but a major accident wasn't her idea of a first day.

She hasn't been inside a theatre in years. She had forgotten what it even involved.

'Clara I need you to scrub in' John said, motioning her to follow.

'Is that a euphemism?'

'No I'm serious. You need to scrub in. Emergency bleed that needs sorting'

'I can't. I haven't been into theatre in years' she said shocked.

'Well noes your chance' John said walking past her and and towards theatre 3.

'It's not funny. This is the only top I have with me' Clara scolded as she tried for the life of her to wipe sick off her shirt. She grimaced at the smell and wanted to just give up right now.

'It is gross. But you'll learn. You've just got to bring extra clothes with you to keep in your locker' John admitted, trying to help her out.

'That's great advice John. Only 5 hours too late. Ugh I'm going to stink' she pouted, as John pulled one of his shirts out of his locker.

'Here'

'How many shirts do you have on there?'

'10 right now. I'll have too bring some clean ones back' he hummed. 'It'll be a bit big but won't smell like sick' he pointed out thinking back to the previous night were she had fallen asleep on the bed in his shirt and looked really hot in it.

It looked really attractive too.

'Ugh. It's huge' she said tucking the shirt in but it didn't help. 'It looks like I lost weight and couldn't be bothered o but new clothes' she scoffed.

'You'll learn'
