Chapter 39 - "Neck..."

John had never delivered a baby before. Hell he'd never even been near a delivery room before, but he knew what he was doing.

It's basic training in meetings and training days.

He knew how to deliver a baby even though he's rather not be in this compromising position right now.

'You have to push Clara. On the next contraction you have to push' John instructed, as she hurtled her whole body forwards and tried at a push but tried to squeeze John's hand at the same time. 'Clara I can't deliver this baby and hold your hand' John announced, as she pushed and he looked down.

He didn't even want to begin to describe what the hell it looked like, so just wiped it out of his memory and hoped that he could wipe all of this day out of his brain as soon as it's over.

'I can't do it. I can't do this' she screamed at him through tears, sweat and any minute now blood.

'You can Clara. Women are made for this kind of thing and you've done it before you can do this' John encouraged looking her in the eye, as she pushed again.

John looked back down and shook his head. 'That's not enough Clara. You have to push harder. Otherwise we aren't getting anywhere' John said.

'I-- I can't. I just can't' Clara said throwing her head back against the lift.

'Yes you can. We all know you can. Your not the first woman to do this now come on' John encouraged as she pushed again and he looked down.

He smirked a little in happiness that after being stuck in the lift for all of 70 minutes that things were finally looking up.

'I can see the head Clara. The little head is there. Keep going' John cried, through actual tears as well, seeing as the had just found out he was not only witnessing the birth of this child but he was delivering his own child.

'Get the Fuck out of me' she screamed through the contraction and John smirked at her as the head was more than visible but John looked up in panic.

'Rory. The cord is wrapped around its neck' John swallowed. 'Pretty tight'

'It's alright dude. Take two fingers and place them under the cord and then push the cord gently over the head, and quickly before the next contraction' Rory instructed so John did exactly that.

Given the situation - Clara really didn't have enough time to be worrying about what he was doing down there - all she wanted not was for the kid to be born so she could relax.

'Okay. Done that' John breathed.

'Right then on the next contraction Clara you need to push. And push like your life depends on it. She should be able to give birth now' Rory said, hoping to God that the baby would be okay.

Much to what would be John's surprise people hadn't been eavesdropping on his conversation, the panic was mostly outside the lift where people were running around, people trying to call people, maternity and doctors everywhere including security and electricians trying to pull the lift up.

'Come on Clara one last push. I know you can do this. One last push' John encouraged as she did indeed push, rather dramatically in his opinion but this whole situation was a dramatic mess.

There was following screaming and swearing.

God there was a lot of swearing coming from both mouths, but it was all worth it in the end. So any normal person would say.

But John breathed easy when he held the baby on his hands but held his breath once again when there was no cry.

'Come on junior. Your not doing this to us. Not today' John said jumping up, and grabbing some clamps and a blanket. (It's amazing the things that an organised Doctor carries in their bag)

He clamped the cord and cut it loose, wrapping the baby in a shirt from his bag and warmed the baby up. 'Come on' he grunted looking up at Clara who was quite the wreck in herself, but the faint sounds of a cry made everyone sign in relief.

Not only Clara and John in the lift, but all the people hanging around outside the lift, hearing the tiny wail - knowing that everything was okay.

John relaxed, collapsing to the ground and pulled the baby up into his arms, shuffling towards Clara and right next to her.

'So... You got any boys names?' John smirked, as the baby continued to wail, and wriggle around in John's arms as she handed him over to Clara.

'Well I was thinking naming him after the ridiculous and goofy Doctor that just delivered him - but seeing as he's the Father it might be a little cheesy' Clara joked, closing her eyes - desperately wanting to escape this death trap.

'Much appreciated' John chuckled, rolling his sleeves right up his arms and taking the baby boys tiny hand, as he wrapped his little fingers around his massive one. '10 fingers and 10 toes. He's perfect Clara' John smiled, a tear very literally to his eye.

'I can't take all the credit. He looks a little like his Dad'

'Fuck me. To think I woke up this morning running completely late to work and worrying about what I was going to have for dinner tonight - and now there's a little person in the world related to me' John scoffed in total confusion but he was pretty happy about it.

'Are you okay? Is everything alright' Rory shouted in.

'It's all good. Mother and baby doing just fine' John shouted out, but not too loudly as he didn't want to frighten the little man of the lift.

'Their getting you out now' Rory shouted, at the same time that the lift rattled moved downwards.

John stood up, as the lift stopped at the ED and wiped his eyes to refrain from total embarrassment and keeping his cool.

'Take him' Clara said, gently handing him to John, and John happily took him in his arms not ever wanting to let him go, but he knew he would have to as he needs to go to maternity.

The silver doors to the cramped lift opened and things were just a total whirlwind as a flood of nurses and midwives ran in, helping Clara up and rushing up to maternity, as John just followed them.

'Hey. You did good man' Rory smirked, patting John on the back, and smiled downwards.

'She had a boy' John smiled, heading up to maternity with Clara.
