Chapter 7: Brook

Well I notice you’ve met a lot of my family. They’re great aren’t they? Well most of them. Some can be a little pushy at times, sorry Beth! Anyways, do I have a secret for you! I talked to Austin today! It’s one of the first times I’ve ever talked to him properly and I was really happy.

                “Hey Brooklyn.”

I turned around only to come face to face with Austin Roberts.

“Uh. Hi Austin. How are you?”

He smiles. “I’m good. How are you Brooklyn? What are you doing?”

I hated people calling me Brooklyn. But the way Austin said it made adrenaline rush through my body. It made my heart beat a little faster.

“I’m fine.” I squeak.

“What’s this?” He asks, picking up my notebook.

His hand brushes past mine and I feel electricity circulate around my body.

“It’s my diary.” I say, trying to take it back.

Austin’s eyes flicker over the paper and my cheeks turn red. Thank God I only wrote about my therapy session with Beth earlier!

“If you’re not busy one day we should go to the beach.”

I nod, my breath catching in my throat.

“See you around Brooklyn.”

Once he walks away, I’m joined by Orlando. I could say of all the guys in 19864, he’s my best friend. He’s funny and I love spending time with him.

“Let’s go outside Brookie. It’s so warm!” He says.

I laugh and he pulls me up from my chair. He drags me through our complex and out into the rose garden. He keeps running until we’re in the meadow. I laugh and we both collapse on the ground in fits of giggles.

“What’s so funny?!” I ask, trying to suppress my giggles.

Orlando sits up. “Oh my God. You and Austin are the most awkward thing I’ve ever seen.”

My cheeks flame red and Orlando raises an eyebrow.

“You like him!” He accuses.

I shake my head. “No. I have more important things to worry about.”

“Like Ada and the human?” He asks with a smirk.

“How do you-?”

“Lucia told me.” He interrupts.

I shake my head. “Of course she did!”

We sit in silence for a few moments before I shift closer to Orlando and elbow him.

“What about you? Which misfit do you have your eye on?”

“I’d hardly call her a misfit.”

“Oh really? And why’s that?” I challenge.

“Because she’s no misfit. She’s beautiful.”

I smile. “Who is she?”

“She’s older than me. And she’s taken.”

“Orlando is it Ada?”

He shakes his head. “Evidently Ada likes humans.”

I chuckle. “Nova?”

He hesitates then nods.

“I’m sorry. If it makes you feel any better her and Phoenix are so awkward to be around people avoid them.”

He laughs. “Thanks Brook.”
