Chapter 20: Toby
Well hello. My name is Tobias William Stewart but everyone calls me Toby. I believe you met me briefly whilst I was speaking with Ada. I’m hoping to run into her again to ask her if she’d like to do something sometime. And there she is!
“Ada!”
She turns around slowly, her smile, that beautiful smile illuminating her features. She runs over to me.
“Hey Toby! I’ve been looking for you!”
I smile. “You have?”
She nods. “I was wondering if you’d like to hang out tomorrow? My friends are both out and I’d be lonely.”
I nod. “Of course. I’d love to.”
She smiles. “Come to the north wing. Knock on door 4 and tell whoever answers that you’re here to see Adelaide.”
I nod. She smiles and hugs me, saying something about meeting before she runs off.
The next evening when I get to the north wing I knock timidly on the door of room four. The door opens, revealing a blonde boy of average height. He’s rather intimidating with his tattoos and eyebrow piercing. He looks like the kind of guy who’d sit in the corner sharpening knives.
“Yes?” He asks, sounding bored.
“I’m here to see Adelaide.” I say boldly.
He shrugs and gestures for me to come in. He closes the door behind me and presses a button on the wall. He then goes back over to sit with a group of teenagers. Ada comes through a door a few minutes later. She smiles and hugs me before taking my arm and pulling me through the endless corridors before pulling me into one room.
The room I have entered is a purple and black room, obviously Ada’s bedroom.
“So Adelaide, what are we doing?” I ask.
She giggles.
“What?”
“You called me Adelaide. No one calls me that. I hate it.”
I smile. “I think it’s beautiful. It’s a beautiful name for a beautiful girl.”
She smiles. “Thank you.”
She hesitates before asking, “Who let you in?”
I shrug. “Some guy who easily looks like he could be an undercover axe murderer. Tattoos, eyebrow piercing.”
Ada laughs. “Harper. That’s Lucia’s boyfriend.”
My eyebrows raise. “Anyways, what are we doing?”
Ada holds up a DVD case.
“Les Misérables.” I read aloud.
She nods. “Lucia loves it. She lent it to me. I figured we might as well watch it. It’s worth a try.”
I smile. “It’s wonderful.”
She raises an eyebrow. “You’ve seen it?”
I nod. “Opening day. I walked downtown to see it. My mum loved the soundtrack so I thought it would be a good idea.”
Ada smiles. “Did your mom enjoy?”
I smile sadly. “I’m sure she did. If angels have cinemas that is.”
Ada frowns. “I’m so sorry Toby.”
I smile. “I’ve never quite understood why humans apologize for things they didn’t do but thank you Adelaide. One cannot blame a person for what they did not know.”
Ada smiles. “Anyway, on with the movie. I want to know whether Anne Hathaway is as good as they say.”
I smile. “She is.”
When the film ends, Ada sighs deeply and wipes her eyes impatiently on my shoulder.
I fake sigh. “Thanks Adelaide. I now have mascara all over my shirt.”
She sighs. “That was wonderful but the greats always die.”
I nod. “Valjean. Javert. Fantine. But Éponine was the saddest. She died for the person she loved. If I had that opportunity I wouldn’t think twice.”
Ada smiles. “Love works in strange ways like that.”
