Chapter 21: Katherine

I’m Katherine Coventry, sister to Elizabeth. You met me when Christian came to visit me. It was nice to meet someone who knows Elizabeth personally. I’ve always wanted to meet her and have never had the opportunity. Christian Santiago is my chance. He’s the one who can ensure I get to meet my sister. After twenty three years, it’s better late than never.

“Christian! Is Elizabeth here?” I ask when I spot him climbing from his car.

He shakes his head sadly.

I frown. “You promised you’d get her here to see me.”

He nods solemnly. “I know I promised Katherine. But one of the kids Beth looks after has been kidnapped so she’s had a rough week. I didn’t want to burden her with anything else.”

I nod. “It’s okay. I’ll just meet her when she has time.”

I turn sadly and begin to walk to my car when someone grabs my elbow. I turn impatiently to see Christian.

“Please Katherine. At least calm down and have coffee with me.”

I nod. “Fine.”

Sitting in the little café with Christian isn’t so bad. We talk a lot about things.

“Married?” Christian asks.

I laugh and shake my head.

“Boyfriend?”

I shake my head. “Recently split up.”

He frowns. “What happened?”

I shrug. “His name was Ben. Benjamin Cole. He was pretty cold and not very affectionate. He hated spending time with me and pretty much went for any girl he saw.”

Christian sighs. “That’s unfortunate.”

I shrug. “I’m just waiting for my right guy.”

He smiles.

“What about you? Wife? Girlfriend?”

Christian shakes his head.

I raise an eyebrow. “I would have thought you had your eye on a girl.”

He nods. “I never said I didn’t have my eye on a girl.”

I nod. “What’s she like?”

He smiles. “She’s amazing. She’s beautiful and smart and funny and kind. I’ve known her for years. She’s one of my oldest friends. I don’t know what I’d do without her.”

I smile. “It’s Beth isn’t it?”

Christian blushes.

“I can tell. You glow when you speak about her. As if she’s an angel.”

He smiles. “It would never happen anyways.”
