Chapter 31: Orlando

Things have been strange around here. Beth and Brook think Austin is bipolar which I find odd. But Brook is insistent on helping him. We haven’t spoken much lately which I sort of regret but she’s always rushing off with him. I noticed Shelton has been a little out of it since Kyoto disappeared and I mean who can blame him. If Brook was kidnapped I’d be heartbroken. Obviously Shelton isn’t in love with his best friend but it’s a similar situation otherwise.

“Hey Shelton. How’re things?” I ask, sitting on the couch opposite him.

He looks up from his book and sighs. It’s eerily silent since the sitting room is absolutely empty.

“How are you feeling?” I ask.

“Like I’ve been dragged to the depths of Tartarus and back.” Shelton says.

“Greek mythology fan?” I ask.

“What?” Shelton replies.

“You said Tartarus. Isn’t that where the Greek Gods banned their father?”

Shelton nods. “Yeah sorry. I’m just really tired. I haven’t been sleeping much.”

“Dude I know Kyoto is your best friend but he wouldn’t want you to be like this. Try and look after yourself for his sake.”

Shelton shakes his head. “You don’t understand Orlando. You don’t know what it’s like to have to keep a secret from your best friend.”

I nod. “I do. Believe me I do.”

“How come?” Shelton asks.

“Brook and I have been best friends for years. And I love her. I really love her. But she’s so busy with Austin she doesn’t notice me anyways. I try not to let it bother me but some days really suck.”

Shelton freezes.

“Dude are you okay? You look kind of scared.” I ask.

Shelton nods. “I’m fine. It’s just- No. I’m fine.”

“You can tell me. What is it?”

And then to my utter shock, Shelton starts crying.

“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” I ask, really confused.

“I’m not hurt. I’m angry. I’m angry that I can’t be me. I’m angry that I have to keep hiding who I am. I’m angry that because Kyoto has disappeared I have more issues to deal with. I can’t handle it!”

“Dude what is this problem?”

He shakes his head. “I can’t tell you.”

“No. You need to tell someone.”

“I’m gay.” He whispers.
