Chapter 48- Ada

Toby’s mad. He’s gone insane. He says he can rescue Beth if he dies in her place. Of course I want Beth back, but at the cost of Toby’s life I’m not sure it’s something I’m willing to allow to happen. I don’t want to lose Toby. A part of me wonders whether this is Toby’s way of showing how much he really loves me, not that I ever doubted it before. I don’t want him to die. It’s too soon.

“Toby please don’t do this. I love you. I need you.” I tell him.

He smiles and pulls me close.

“Listen to me.” He says. “I have to do this. You’re telling me if you could you wouldn’t?”

I shake my head. “Of course I’d save Beth.”

“So how can you expect me not to?” He asks.

I shake my head fiercely. “No. This is my fault. It’s my fault that you’re here. It’s my fault you know Beth. I’m not going to let it be my fault that you die.”

“It won’t be your fault.” He says with a smile. “It’ll be mine.”

I shake my head. “Toby please don’t do this.”

“I have to. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”

“I love you.” I say.

He smiles. “I know. And I won’t ever forget you.”

I nod, tears running down my cheeks and hug him tightly.

“Toby I’m sorry.”

“For what?” He asks.

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t love you as much as you love me. I’m sorry I can’t be a good enough person for you. You deserve a lot better than I’ll ever be.”

He shakes his head. “I don’t care. You’re all I’ll ever want.”

I smile. “Thank you so much Toby.”

“For what?” He asks.

“Thank you for being you. Thank you for loving me and thank you for being the best friend I could ever ask for.”

He smiles. “It has been a pleasure Miss Kelley.”

I nod and out of the corner of my eye, see Damien walking towards us.

                “Toby.” He says.

“I’m going to ask you to do me a favour.” Toby says.

Damien nods. “Of course. Anything.”

“Look after her for me.”

Damien nods. “I will. I promise.”

Toby then sits on the ground.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“It’s almost time.” He says.

I sit beside him, clutching his hand.

After a few minutes of silence, Toby starts to rock back and forth, slowly losing consciousness. And then he looks up at me and before the last bits of light leave his eyes, he smiles.

I smile back through my tears, and then he’s gone.

                At that moment, I hear shouting behind me. I turn to see Beth sitting up wearily.

“What happened?” She asks.

I run towards her pulling her into a hug. She looks over my shoulder and sees the body.

“Toby.” She says quietly.

I nod. “It’s what he wanted.”

She shakes her head. “I am so sorry Ada.”
