Chapter 22: Orlando

Well you’ve never been inside my head before. I’m Orlando, Lucia’s brother and Brook’s best friend. She’s so wonderful. I’ve never met anyone quite like her in my life. Now you’re probably wondering what’s up with that since I told Brook that I liked Nova. That was simply a cover up and Nova was the convenient person as she is taken and the most beautiful after Brook in my opinion.

Well you may remember that I promised Brook a trip to the theatre to see Evita a few days ago and true to my word, we did go. She loved it of course. I knew she’d always loved musicals even though she wouldn’t admit that to anyone. It ruined her tough girl exterior. She isn’t a tough person but with her background, she feels like she has to be. I’m the only person who knows who she truly is.

She’s calm and sweet and funny and she doesn’t worry too much. Her smile could light up New York City when she’s happy and her laugh is infectious. Sorry I got a little carried away there. But now you understand. She’s so wonderful. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me and she doesn’t realize it. She’s too busy obsessing over Austin who seems a little odd if you ask me. But I’m here to talk about the shocking thing she told me when we went to see Evita.

“Thanks for bringing me here Orlando.” Brook said.

I smiled. “It’s okay. I know how much you love this show.”

She laughed. “Maybe it’ll give Harper some ideas.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Him and Lucia. They’re kind of together now I think.” She said.

I froze. “What?”

Brook nodded. “He kissed her and they argued but he sang to her and they made up. I think they’re together now.”

I nodded. “Right.”

I plan to confront Lucia about it. I’ve always felt protective of her, being older than her. It’s just a natural brotherly instinct I guess, Harper isn’t right for her. He’s too old and he kind of freaks me out.

“Hey Luc!” I call across the living room.

She waves and walks over to me.

“Hey! How was Evita?” She asks.

I smile. “It was great. Brook loved it.”

She smiles. “I’d love to have seen it.”

“You should have asked Harper.” I say venomously.

“What?”

“Oh come on Luc. Did you think I wouldn’t find out?!”

She shrugs. “I was going to tell you when I thought you wouldn’t freak out about it.”

I shake my head. “When did you think I wouldn’t freak out about it?!”

“I don’t know. Maybe when you can accept that the way I feel about Harper is no different to how you feel about Brook.”

“What?” I ask incredulously.

“Really? I’ve seen the way you look at her. The way you are around her when you think no one can see you. I know you love her. I just don’t understand why you don’t ask her out properly before she goes to cloud nine with Austin. It’ll happen. When you understand real love, the feeling of loving a person the way I love Harper then you can criticize my relationship.”

Lucia storms away and I sigh. I should have expected my sister to notice the way I am with Brook and I don’t really have a right to be pissed about her relationship with Harper. It just irritates me that I can never protect her from being hurt.
