Chapter 46- Orlando
I know the battle has begun the moment a building bursts into flames. I take Brook’s hand, pulling her away.
“I have to find Itoust. Before it’s too late!” She shouts.
She darts down an alley as I leap out of the way of an oncoming firebomb. I’m about to race after Brook when I hear shouting. I turn only to see a large crowd. I rush over to them.
“What’s going on?” I shout.
“The baby.” Vie explains.
“Okay. Phoenix, Vie, Flo, get Nova to the hospital. The rest of you divide and conquer. We have on good knowledge there should be around eight demons. You’ll need about two people to fight each so break off into pairs and tackle the demon problem. Harper, you come with me.”
“No way.”
“What?” I call.
“You must be mad if you think I’m going to leave her here.” He says nodding towards Lucia.
“Fine. Have it your way. Kyoto. Help now!”
Kyoto nods and races after me. We rush down the alley Brook disappeared into and I find her at the end, staring into the face of a gruesome being. He looks like Austin slightly but he has massive talons and a gross, warped body.
“Brook what the hell are you thinking?” I shout, rushing up behind her.
She turns her head when she hears me.
“I need your help quickly. Orlando distract it, Kyoto do you have a knife?”
Kyoto throws a knife to Brook and I start shouting. The beast turns and lunges towards me. At this point, Brook lifts the knife, jamming it into the thing’s spine. It howls in pain. She runs around it and next jams the blade into its left hand. It lets out a horrible shrieking sound and Brook uses the opportunity to stab it between the eyes. It yelps and gropes at its face. Brook runs to the other side of the monster but it is too quick. One hand, with its long, sharp talons has swung out, and caught Brook’s face. She screams and with one final ounce of energy, she plunges the knife into its chest. It yelps and starts to fold in on itself. Brook clutches the side of her face. I run towards her.
“Brook your face.” I start, trying to peel away her hand.
“No. Leave it. I have to see what happened.”
She takes a deep breath and turns, only to find Austin, lying curled up in a ball on the floor. She lets out a strangled cry and runs towards him.
She helps him climb to his feet and she recounts what happens. He smiles and thanks her and she nods and starts going on about different types of bravery. It’s only then that Austin notices that she’s clutching the side of her face. He gently peels her hand away and gasps as he sees the cut. I rush over, only to see three long, deep cuts running down her cheek.
“Brook I’m so sorry.” Austin says.
“It’s okay. It wasn’t you. It was the demon. It was a small price to pay.” She says with a smile.
I nod. She truly is brilliant.
