Chapter 23

                 

When I take a seat at my desk the next morning I immediately pick up my phone and dial Steve's number. After a few rings he says, "Steve Mackenzie."

          I take a deep breath and say, "Its Laynie."

          I hear him take a seat and then he says, "I thought you wouldn't call me back."

          I sigh and say, "You're entitled to your visit."

          I hear him do a light snort and then he says, "So when can I come and see her?"

          "In July. It's the earliest my boyfriend and I can both get a two week vacation."

          I hear him sigh and say, "That's still a month and a half away Laynie. I want to come sooner."

          I let out an annoyed breath and say, "Well you can't Steve. July is the absolute earliest you can come."

          We talk about it back and forth for a few minutes until he finally caves and says, "Alright Laynie. You win. I'll see you in July. I'll text you my arrival time once I have it."

          I agree and let him know that he can stay at my apartment. We then say goodbye and I hang up. I lean back in my chair and run my hands through my hair. Antonio sees this and says, "What's been stressing you out so much?"

          I glance over at him and say, "Camille's Dad is coming to visit, Roman is less than happy about it, and Camille is starting to get sick. This is just not my week."

Antonio nods and says, "I get it. If you ever need someone to talk to I'm always here, alright?"

          I nod and thank him. I then head with Dad to the interrogation room to talk to Kate about why she murdered her best friend the way she did.
