Chapter 44

I groan after I hang up my phone. Everyone turns to look at me so I say, "That was the desk sergeant over at the 23rd. Another girl with red hair was stabbed this morning. That's two girls with the same colored hair in two days."

Everyone shakes their heads and then Dad says, "Ruzek and Atwater; go see what Intel you can gather from that case. I'd put money on it that these two cases are linked."

The two of them nod and exit the bullpen. Before Dad goes back to his office he turns to the rest of us and says, "I've seen some cases like this before. If we don't get on it more innocent women will be killed. Get to work, do whatever you need to do, reach out to your CI's, just get this man in custody before more women have to be lost. Bringing this scumbag in is our top priority."

We all nod and get to work. I go onto my computer and begin to look up situations like this that have occurred in the U.S. in the last year or so. After that search reveals nothing to me I begin reaching out to my CI's that always have a watchful eye out on the streets for unusual activity. I'm about halfway through my list when Antonio leans against my desk and says, "Did you ever have a case like this in LA?"

I think for a moment and then say, "We did, now that you mention it. The case didn't come to mind as the girls all had black hair but it could be the same guy."

Antonio agrees and says, "He could've had a shift in interests. Nothing is out of the question at this point."

I nod in agreement and then pick up my phone and dial Steve's number. He answers quickly and after I explain the situation he agrees to send over the official report from the case. After we hang up I go to Dad's office to tell him that I might have a lead.
